Clinical Coordinator Quality and Utilization Management

Reporting to the Manager for Quality and Utilization Management (QUM) and working in collaboration with other members of the PBCO team, the Clinical Coordinator, QUM is responsible for providing transfusion medicine clinical support to BC hospitals and internal staff by developing, coordinating, implementing and maintaining PBCO quality and utilization management projects and programs.  This includes facilitating and supporting the development of clinical guidelines, educational materials and tools. The Clinical Coordinator will build strong and effective relationships with transfusion medicine personnel, relevant health authorities and other clinicians across BC to secure access to resources, provide expertise and exchange information.

 

Duties/Accountabilities 

  • Provides transfusion medicine clinical support to BC hospitals and internal staff by developing, coordinating, implementing and maintaining various aspects of the PBCO quality and utilization management projects and programs.
  • Provides literature search and review and coordinates the development and dissemination of newly developed guidelines and other evidence-based materials to clinicians as required for PBCO projects and programs
  • Develops, implements and maintains clinical tools and education resources for physicians and care providers.
  • Provides day-to-day on-site quality and utilization management clinical support, education and training to BC hospitals, clinicians and PBCO staff as required. Troubleshoots and resolves issues as necessary.
  • Monitors and evaluates the operation of blood quality and utilization management projects and programs through such means as data collection and analysis, stakeholder surveys and operational reviews. Provides feedback and recommendations to the QUM Manager.
  • Establishes linkages with other health authorities and clinicians across BC to guide appropriate blood management approaches and to share information and identify opportunities for collaboration, cost-efficiencies and patient safety.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of research projects including development of the research protocol, application for ethics approval if required, literature search and review, data collection and analysis, evaluation of results and presentation of research findings.
  • Organizes and chairs forums, resource groups, meetings and teleconferences with stakeholders as needed. Represents the PBCO on provincial and national working groups regarding blood issues as required.
  • Utilizes evidence-based clinical decision support tools such as protocols, care paths, structured improvement collaborative, the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle (Model for Improvement), Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Contributes to continuous quality improvement of the department by identifying and evaluating new initiatives, developments and trends in quality and utilization management.
  • Utilizes LEAN management approaches and thinking in planning and implementing projects. 

Qualifications

 

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field plus a minimum of five (5) years of recent related clinical nursing experience including experience in project management in a complex health setting, clinical adult education and/or research. Registration or membership with a professional organization considered an asset. 

 

Knowledge of transfusion medicine and professional practice. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally. Ability to navigate complex health care systems.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Excellent planning and organizational skills including the ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines.  Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities. Understanding of LEAN principles and applications in clinical and administrative settings will be an asset.  Demonstrated computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, Outlook, Explorer).
