The British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) is the lead Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agency in British Columbia, the largest EMS provider in Canada, and one of the largest in North America responding to over 500,000 ground calls and 7800 air calls every year. BCAS operates under the authority of the BC Emergency Health Services which is supported by the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA).

Join the BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and become a trusted and respected figure in your community.  Working as an EMR is an entry-level, community-focused position ideal for people who live and work in a rural or remote area and have a desire to make a difference. EMR’s typically work in the station where they are hired; however, getting a Primary Care Paramedical license will lead to opportunities in other stations.


Our pre-requisites for working as a paramedic in our rural/remote stations include:

  • Valid EMR or PCP license
  • Valid Class 1, 2 or 4 BC Driver's License (or out of province equivalent)
  • Driver's Abstract

Duties and Responsibilities

As a valued health care professional, practitioners will:

  • provide quality patient care in pre-hospital emergency situations
  • be a patient advocate who can communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, other allied health care professionals and public safety partners
  • ensure safe, proficient, and efficient patient care and transportation
  • maintain current knowledge and skill required for the position
  • provide direction and supervise observers on car and/or trainees, as required
  • maintain the station and facilities in tidy and clean working order
  • be responsible for the safe operation of ambulances
  • enhance service delivery and patient care by identifying issues and strategies for addressing actual/potential complex program or system-wide problems and concerns.
