Under the general direction of the Director, Knowledge Translation and Executive Director, CHI, the Communications Specialist is responsible for: 


  • All facets of internal communications relating to the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation that will promote the goals and mandate and contribute to the success of CHI programs and initiatives.
  • Participates in change management activities and assists in the planning, development and implementation of communications to facilitate change.
  • External Communications - works closely with, and under the direction of, the Communications and PR departments at the U of M and WRHA in order to provide a unified corporate communications strategy




  • A degree in Public Relations, Creative Communications, Marketing and/or Journalism is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience as recognized by the WRHA may be considered.
  • Membership in the Health Care Public Relations Association (HCPRA), International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations society (CPRS) would be considered an asset.
  • Must have working knowledge of computer applications and be proficient in MS Office including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, desktop publishing and web-based design and content management programs.
  • Training in the use of graphic design software and project management software would be an asset.
  • Training in change management and communications to facilitate change an asset.

  • Minimum of five years communications experience including internal corporate communications planning and execution, preferably in a health care, research or public sector setting.
  • Previous experience working on a team that implemented an organizational change effort, an asset.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills for a variety of media (print, web, video, advertising) and audiences.
  • Knowledge of change management principles and methodologies.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills and proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines; attention to the accuracy of grammar, spelling and punctuation is imperative.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, independently on projects and collaboratively as a strong team member.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Demonstrated innovation and creativity.
  • Must work well under pressure and within deadlines.
  • Ability to work in different environments and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to adapt to changing roles as the Centre grows and evolves.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and the use of a vehicle.
  • Must be available (on occasion) to attend to issues outside of usual working hours, as required.


This position is subject to a Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search, an Adult Abuse Registry Check, and a Child Abuse Registry Check. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred.
