Job Description

The Manager, Payroll & Benefits Administration is responsible for the overall management of the payroll operation and benefits administration while establishing a safe and welcoming work environment for all employees. This position is also responsible for participating in the planning of corporate payroll initiatives and the implementation of such initiatives with regards to payroll processing. Ensures adherence to all policies and procedures. Motivates and leads by example and provides a learning environment. Develops performance objectives and delivers performance evaluations for direct reports. Actively participates in the recruitment and hiring process for Payroll team members. 


Duties and responsibilities for our next Manager, Payroll & Benefits Administration will include:

  • Providing leadership, direction and mentoring to the overall payroll operations and benefits administration and developing performance objectives and delivering performance evaluations for direct reports
  • Reviewing payroll processes and recommends changes, procedures and system enhancements to improve efficiency and consistency of administration
  • Reviewing payroll data, oversees third party remittances related to payroll accounts as applicable, including regulatory reporting and remittances, etc.
  • Designing and implementing reconciliations to audit payroll and benefits data, including all amounts processed through the payroll process as earnings, deductions or taxable benefits
  • Designing and preparing specifications for Cognos reports, as related to payroll processing
  • Responsibility for T4 processing and payroll reporting
  • Communicating payroll information to the organization and supporting site HR team members with payroll inquiries and training as applicable
  • Identifying training requirements to support payroll operations and benefits administration
  • Maintaining payroll guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures
  • Complying with federal, provincial and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; making recommendation to management on new or revised activities and actions
  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications and establishing networks
  • Maintaining employee confidence and protecting payroll operations by keeping information confidential
  • Developing and cultivating strong working relationships with all stakeholders; including Human Resources, Total Rewards and HCMS team members as well as site Managers and HR team members
  • Ensuring compliance with licensing laws, health and safety and other statutory regulations
  • Contributing to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Performing other duties as assigned or directed

  • Post-Secondary education in payroll, finance or accounting, or a suitable combination of education and experience
  • CPP or CPM payroll designation required, Accounting designation also an asset
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in payroll, along with a minimum of 3 years in management
  • JDE knowledge is required
  • Knowledge of Kronos or other time and attendance applications an asset
  • Ability to exceed internal and external customer expectations through timely, effective and service oriented communication
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple payroll platforms and service providers
  • Expert level of knowledge of MS Office
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, growing organization to tight deadlines, while maintaining high volume and accurate output
  • Able to work independently and as part of a diverse, high performing team
