The Cytogenetic Technologist performs a variety of tests and procedures on specimens submitted for cytogenetic analyses using cytogenetic and molecular techniques in the context of the organization’s quality management system.


What you’ll do

  • Assign patient identification number and checks various regional databases for previous relevant analyses
  • Validate and maintain inventory, and prepare reagents used for test procedures.
  • Set up and harvest cultures for cytogenetic analyses
  • Prepare slides and perform various banding techniques such as G-banding, C-banding
  • Prepare slides and perform fluorescence in situ hybridization
  • Perform DNA/RNA extraction and molecular techniques
  • Perform troubleshooting on related techniques to consistently achieve high quality
  • Perform analyses and prepare computerized images of karyograms.
  • Prepare final cytogenetic laboratory reports to send out to physicians.
  • Validate, operate and perform preventive maintenance for a variety of laboratory equipment/instrumentation

 

What you bring

 

  • Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences in Clinical Genetics
  • Graduation from the post graduate diploma program in Clinical Genetics from the British Columbia Institute of Technology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

 

You have also demonstrated:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of related discipline.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Attention to details.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Skill in the operation of related equipment and in techniques appropriate to the designated area.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
