The Division of Anatomical Pathology in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at BC Children’s Hospital is an academic clinical division delivering tertiary pediatric and perinatal pathology care for the patients at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals. The Division supports the provincial oncology, transplant, medical genetic, and maternal-fetal medicine programs, and is a resource for pediatric and perinatal pathology throughout the province. The Division is active in basic, translational, and clinical research activities within the hospital and at the associated BC Children’s Research Institute.


The Division of Anatomical Pathology is responsible for providing academic pediatric and perinatal diagnostic care for the province of British Columbia, including pediatric surgical pathology, placental pathology, and pediatric, perinatal, and fetal autopsy services. The provincial autopsy service includes cases of apparently natural unexpected death in infancy and childhood (SUDI/SUDC) referred through the BC Coroners Service. The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is seeking a pediatric and perinatal anatomical pathologist to support the Division’s growing pediatric/perinatal autopsy program and academic productivity.


The ideal candidate will be a pediatric anatomical pathologist experienced in all areas of pediatric, fetal and placental pathology and will participate in all divisional service rotations including surgical and placental pathology, embryo/fetal pathology, and autopsies. As the successful candidate, you will provide expert consultative services to physicians and other health care providers and collaborate with colleagues in the provision of family-centered diagnostic programs. Effective communication skills are essential. Opportunities for teaching, research, and administrative endeavours within and outside the division are available and encouraged.


Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent, be eligible for licensure in the Province of British Columbia, and have or be eligible for certification in Anatomical Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Preference will be given to candidates with experience, recognized fellowship, or qualification in pediatric, fetal, and obstetric anatomical pathology. Active involvement in research, teaching, and administrative activities will be an important consideration.


The successful candidate will be recommended for a clinical faculty appointment to the University of British Columbia (UBC), in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Opportunities for appointment to the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute are available.
