Psychologist Assistant, START Program, Forensic Psychiatric Services

As part of the provincial mental health services continuum, BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services provides a diverse range of specialized, "one-of-a-kind" tertiary level mental health services to residents across all geographic areas in BC. These include Adult Forensic Psychiatric Services located at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital plus six regional clinics. In addition to direct services, BC Mental Health & Addiction Services acts as a support and resource to service providers across the province, and contributes to research and education.

Under the direction of the Vice President, Medical Affairs & Research, the Psychology Assistant coordinates the Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) and Integrated Treatment Plan (ITP) program within the Forensic Psychiatric Services which includes conducting quality assurance audits to determine frequency and completeness of START assessment forms, following up on outstanding issues with collected forms, and ensuring that the FPH units and Regional Clinics have current versions of the forms. The Psychologist Assistant conducts literature reviews, assists with START and ITP related research projects, planning and arranging workshops, and logging and tracking data in spreadsheets. 

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Assists with administrative and quality assurance aspects of the START and ITP implementation program fidelity by methods such as conducting reviews of patient files to monitor frequency of START assessment completion and proper filing of the forms, assisting with quality assurance by reviewing the START forms for completeness, indentifying and following-up on incomplete or incorrectly filled out forms, and liaising with the treatment teams as appropriate; collaborating with Clinical Information Services in electronic audits of START and ITP completion; and collecting completed START and ITP forms from FPH units and the Regional Clinics, and ensuring current versions of the START forms are available on the FPH units and at the Regional Clinics.
  • Supports START and ITP related research projects by methods such as conducting literature reviews, assisting with the preparation and submission of research applications to Research Ethics Boards, and assisting with the preparation and submission of research funding applications to funding agencies. 
  • Assists with START workshops by methods such as planning and organising all aspects of START workshops (including venue, logistics, and audio visual set-up), preparing START trainer and participant packages for workshops, setting-up the training room for the workshops, presenting workshop content if requested, collecting participant feedback questionnaire surveys, entering and maintaining an electronic database, and assisting with statistical analysis and interpretation of feedback information.
  • Facilitates START manual purchases and distribution by methods such as completing revisions to the manual in consultation with the Vice President, Medical Affairs & Research; managing electronic and paper orders for START manuals, processing and dispatching START manuals, maintaining financial administrative aspects of the START account and entering financial data into a spreadsheet, maintaining a tracking system and data base for orders and dispatching of manuals, printing batch orders of START manuals and liaising with printers as appropriate, and preparing correspondence for the Vice President, Medical Affairs & Research signature regarding START accounts payable.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Education, Training and Experience


  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology
  • Recognized training and/ or experience in administering a wide variety of psychodiagnostic tests.
  • Specialized academic course and experience in forensic psychology including risk assessment and risk management for specific areas of offending (i.e. sexual assault, spousal assault and violence).
  • Valid BC Drivers License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.

  • General knowledge at the Undergraduate level on psychological testing and psychopathology.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well with others and with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and to prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, problem-solve, and effectively deal with conflict situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including basic knowledge of computer software I.e. Windows, MS Word, Excel and statistical applications, e.g., SPSS.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
