Corporate Director, Academic Education

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer – Research, the Corporate Director, Academic Education provides strategic leadership in advancing the education component of PHSA’s tripartite mission as an academic health science organization. The Corporate Director works in collaboration with agency-based educators to lead development of strategic plans, performance metrics, policies, platforms and processes aimed at coordinating student practice education across PHSA and achieving the goal of a high performance health workforce. The director works across disciplinary and institutional lines to facilitate an integrated approach to academic education with partners, including academic institutions, health authorities, research institutes and government. The Corporate Director represents PHSA in formal and informal cross-sectoral planning, and collaborates with PHSA enterprise-wide stakeholders to understand and meet student and organizational needs related to academic education.

 

Duties/Accountabilities 

  • Leads development and implementation of strategic plans to foster student practice education improvement and innovation across the PHSA in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensures PHSA is in compliance with academic and regulatory requirements involving academic education. This includes provincial practice education guidelines addressing requirements such as student orientation and privacy/confidentiality/health/safety training.
  • Leads development, execution and ongoing management of academic affiliation agreements governing student placements across PHSA, and ensures optimal standardization and streamlining of such agreements.
  • Coordinates planning across disciplines and provincial networks to identify desired policy and practice outcomes, and to identify and implement system approaches that manage and optimize learning opportunities for health care students.
  • Collaborates with colleagues within IMITS, HSSBC, HIM and the Clinical and Systems Transformation project to ensure learner needs are identified, understood and met as PHSA undergoes clinical system transformation.
  • Leads further deployment and use of HSPNet, in collaboration with professional practice colleagues, to optimize automation of student practice placements within PHSA, and use of placement data to improve management of student practice education as a system.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in academic education and facilitates knowledge exchange/application by reviewing literature, attending relevant conferences/continuing education, and liaising with networks, external organizations, industry advisory groups and members of professional associations.
  • Leads project operation teams, working groups, and external contractors to achieve project goals and objectives, and fosters team and consensus building among relevant teams and working groups.
  • Provides leadership to staff by fostering an atmosphere which promotes and encourages employees to realize their maximum potential and encourages growth. Oversees human resource management. Conducts employee performance reviews and completes appraisals for staff. Recruits staff and supports managing labour relations issues such as discipline up to and including termination.  

Qualifications:

 

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s in Education (Adult Education, Education Leadership, or Education Administration), and a health professional qualification, plus a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively increasing responsibility in education, and applied educational research and knowledge exchange leadership roles.

 

  • Broad knowledge of the academic health mandate, including care, research, and education, as well as technology enabled models in education, financial management, and project management.
  • Demonstrated experience in a decision making role within clinical practice environments including rural and urban settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge and facilitate linkages between research, decision-making, education and clinical practice communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance strategic initiatives and manage projects and budgets in a timely manner and in an inter-professional, multi-program and multi-site environment.
  • Exemplary collaborative leadership skills in working with others to identify issues, design creative solutions, follow-up with action and evaluate results.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for progressive, innovative thinking. Ability to integrate and apply learning and education principles, and develop and deliver education programs in diverse health care settings.
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, facilitation and leadership skills including the ability to negotiate with and influence others, both internal and external to the organization at various levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to productively use spreadsheet, word processing, database, and project applications.
