Regional Medical Director
BC Emergency Health Services
Contracted Position (0.50 FTE)
Vancouver, BC

 

BC Emergency Health Services is responsible for the delivery, coordination and governance of out-of-hospital emergency health services and inter-facility patient transfer planning and coordination services.

 

Reporting to the Vice President, Clinical Practice and Medical Programs, the Medical Director is responsible for the quality of patient care delivered within BCEHS through the provision of medical oversight to an assigned program area. As a member of the medical leadership team, the Medical Director is responsible for the quality of patient care delivered within BCEHS through the provision of medical oversight to an assigned program area.

 

Key Accountabilities: 

  • The Medical Director is responsible for providing clinical leadership and input to program area operational decisions;
  • The Medical Director is responsible for ensuring that approved medical policies, standards and protocols are known and applied within the program area;
  • The Medical Director reviews existing medical policies, standards and protocols and, where necessary, recommends changes or additions to those to ensure their effective application within the program area;
  • The Medical Director is responsible for the program area clinical quality program including collaborating with the quality staff and clinical leaders, analysis of regional reports and feedback to all staff after review of calls;
  • The Medical Director supports the development of key clinical education / training directly to staff and first responders;
  • Models behavior that engages teams and furthers the goals and objectives of the Agency.
  • Leads relationships with medical leaders within the region, including medical leaders within the regional Health Authority and other community stakeholders.
  • Ensures a system of quality review and assessment across medical programs within the region, and ensures that recommendations from these committees are appropriately communicated and acted upon to facilitate system improvement.
  • Supports medical research and academic activities within the region. 

Qualifications 

 

Education, Training and Experience 

 

A Physician license to practice medicine in the province of British Columbia and either a Certificate of Competency in Emergency Medicine or a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Canada with a specialty in an acute care discipline with experience in an emergency health services leadership role is required. Executive or leadership training (e.g. MBA, Physician Management Institute or equivalent) is considered an asset. Minimum 3 years of clinical experience in a relevant environment. Minimum 3 years of successful leadership and/or administrative experience in a relevant health care environment, preferably Emergency Medicine. 

 

As the role model and leader for ensuring quality patient care is delivered, bring the ability to build teams and facilitate environments of collaboration and cooperation; demonstrate the ability to achieve results with the resources available; and be able to identify, establish and communicate clear and meaningful expectations and outcomes that are evaluated and measured. The ability to collaborate and develop coalitions among stakeholders to continuously improve the delivery of emergency health services is required. 

 

Skills and Abilities 

  • Leadership competencies required for this position outlined in the PHSA LEADS Framework are critical to the success of this position.
  • Proven ability to engage, collaborate, negotiate, influence and mediate resolutions to complex situations.
  • Ability to build coalitions, and interact tactfully and effectively with staff at all organizational levels both internally and externally to PHSA.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
