BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province’s most acutely ill or injured children and youth, provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC, and offers a broad range of health services. Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children (SHHC), a leading provincial facility offering specialized services to children and youth with developmental disabilities from birth to age 19, works collaboratively with BCCH. SHHC focuses on the child and their family while supporting health care professionals in their community. BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.

An outstanding opportunity is available to work within the Provincial program for children with Complex Developmental and Behavioral conditions. This work relates to the Division of Developmental Pediatrics at BCCH/SHHC and certain Regional Health Authorities.


As a General Pediatrician you will be expected to work both independently and with an inter-disciplinary team in providing regional and tertiary assessments. A portion of time will be spent in Outreach and at SHHC. Subspecialty Developmental Pediatric faculty members will initially oversee all cases. There will be specific training provided for developmental and behavioral competency. This will include, but is not limited to Intellectual Disorder, Learning Disorders, the medical diagnostic evaluation of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other complex developmental behavioral conditions. It is expected that over time, increasing autonomy and decision making will be expected in this role.


A component of training will also be on work within team structures. Teams are often comprised of social work, psychology, speech language pathology and occupational therapy.


Medical students and pediatric residents rotate at SHHC and the successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching. SHHC has a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement and all team members are expected to help with implementation of changes.


This opportunity will provide the successful applicant with an in depth experience with children and their families who have complex neurodevelopmental conditions.

The successful candidate will have completed training in Pediatrics at a Royal College certified site and be able to obtain licensure to practice general pediatrics in British Columbia.


The successful candidate will be appointed (clinical rank commensurate with experience) within the Department of Pediatrics and will participate in clinical care, teaching, and quality improvement. It is anticipated that the candidate will also establish privileges in designated Health Authorities. Outreach work will be covered via the Regional Health Authority via APP or sessional fees and SHHC work will be covered by contract. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
