BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province's most acutely ill or injured children and youth, provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC, and offers a broad range of health services. Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children (SHHC), a leading provincial facility offering specialized services to children and youth with developmental disabilities from birth to age 19, works collaboratively with BCCH. SHHC focuses on the child and their family while supporting health care professionals in their community. BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.


Looking Glass Residence is a 14-bed residential treatment facility for young men and women, aged 17 to 24, who are suffering from anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating, and other eating disorders. 24/7 care and support is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of medical and mental health professionals who offer an intensive 12-week program of structured therapy in a caring, home-like setting.

Mental Health Worker, Looking Glass Residence

Casual Opportunity 

Shifts: Days/Evenings/Nights

Vancouver, BC


Reporting to the Nurse Supervisor, the Mental Health Worker supports individuals admitted to the Looking Glass Residence in the recovery process by participating in service/care planning including by planning, implementing and evaluating recreation/leisure program(s) as part of the resident’s individualized recovery plan through one-to-one and group contact as well as providing day-to-day physical, emotional and social support to promote independence among admitted residents. Supports the program milieu as required.


Example of Duties & Accountabilities 

  • Contributes to residents achieving their goals by planning, implementing and evaluating recreation/leisure program(s) based on the individualized recovery plans. Acts as a role model, demonstrating, participating and assisting residents in lifespan development activities such as activities of daily living, meal support, healthy lifestyles and interpersonal communication. 
  • Monitors, evaluates, and documents resident progress within the recreation/leisure program(s) and reports observations such as emotional well-being and social behaviour to nursing/medical staff as required. 
  • Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team in the development of individualized recovery plans by identifying and assessing resident needs, skill, interest and goals; gathering appropriate history, and collecting relevant records and documentation. Recommends approaches to provide appropriate treatment that addresses identifiable risk factors and enables independence and integration into the community; and monitors, reassesses and adjusts the treatment plan to reflect the resident’s progress. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities by performing duties such as providing input/feedback to supervisor on processes and opportunities for process improvement; reports unsafe situations and reports as per provincial and organization’s policies and procedures.
  • Supports program milieu as required by maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment for residents. 
  • Provides direction to volunteers and students during activity programs and demonstrates related techniques as required. 
  • Participates in departmental and other meetings as requested. 
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning equipment, potential hazards, and supply needs to the Nurse  Supervisor. 



Education, Training and Experience 

  • Grade 12, Certificate in Community Mental Health, and one year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 
  • Valid Class 4 BC Driver's License. 
  • Valid First Aid Certificate and current CPR certification.

  • Ability to organize work. 
  • Ability to supervise. 
  • Ability to deal with others effectively. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. 
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
