PHSA together with BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS) took on responsibility for the delivery of health care services in BC Corrections facilities in October 2017. PHSA is mandated to improve the quality and continuity of care for clients across the province during their time in correctional facilities and as they reintegrate into the community. This will help to improve access to primary health care, as well as mental health and substance use supports for inmates, key needs that have been identified not just in BC, but internationally.

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient/resident safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. In alignment with established standards, policies and procedures, the Mental Health and Substance Use Intake Screener meets with all clients admitted to a correctional centre within 24 hours to administer a standardized trauma informed screening and assessment protocol to identify mental health and substance use concerns clients who are identified to have a mental health, and/or substance use concern or are referred by the Intake Screener for a comprehensive assessment by a regulated health care professional. All services are provided through an Indigenous cultural competency lens and within a trauma informed framework.




Education, Training and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related allied heath discipline
  • Two (2) years recent related experience in a mental health and/or substance use care setting working with offenders, forensic mental health patients and/or in secure health care settings or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the specific symptoms of major mental illnesses, substance use and/or concurrent disorders.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, adjust to new or unexpected events and to deal effectively with conflict situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding of trauma informed practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work and establish workload priorities.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
