BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) is recruiting additional Perfusionists to increase its complement of skilled Pediatric Perfusionists to meet the current and future demands of this growing program and promote work-life balance.
Over the past five years, the cardiac surgery program at BCCH has grown to include cardiac transplant procedures and internal and external cardiac devices (such as Berlin Hearts and VADs). In November of 2017, BC Children’s Hospital opened a new acute care hospital with state of the art operating rooms, including hybrid interventional/cardiac rooms, all outfitted with the latest technology to support advances in pediatric surgical care.
As part of this dynamic team, you will be involved in the operation of cardiovascular perfusion for a variety of surgical and therapeutic procedures to care for BC’s neonatal and pediatric patients. Your responsibilities will include: performing ECLS initiations and clinical consultation; cell saver activity; managing the physiologic care of children undergoing heart surgery; and maintenance of the specialized equipment used by our perfusion team. Your expertise and knowledge of the complex technology required to meet industry standards for perfusion care will be crucial in assisting the organization to ensure we have the best equipment available to meet the clinical demands of the pediatric population, while ensuring standardization of equipment across the province. You will work collaboratively with a number of programs within the organization, including the cardiology program, the cardiac surgical team, the orthopedic surgical team, the critical care team (including ECLS), and other health professionals, including anesthesia assistants, nurses, and administration.
The Perfusion department is actively engaged in interdisciplinary education around extracorporeal technology both within the hospital and provincially with the BCIT School of Perfusion Sciences.
What you’ll do
- Perform patient calculations and select, set up, prime, operate and maintain appropriate specialized cardiovascular perfusion equipment for a variety of surgical procedures such as cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, and organ transplantation.
- Monitor physiological responses to cardiopulmonary bypass by monitoring flows and pressures (such as venous return); collecting and analyzing blood samples; and monitoring laboratory results.
- Work collaboratively with Biomedical Engineering to ensure all perfusion related equipment meets current standards for maintenance.
- Assist medical staff with equipment evaluations related to cardiovascular perfusion as directed by providing feedback and input.
- Participate in perfusion science research projects by reviewing literature and modifying current equipment and procedures and/or developing and testing new equipment and procedures under the direction of the Cardiac Surgeons and/or Anesthetists.
What you bring
- Graduation from an accredited cardiovascular perfusion program
- Three (3) years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Current experience with Sorin S5 Heart Lung Machine and Berlin heart, Rotoflow, Centrimag, and Heartware blood pumps an asset.
- Minimum of one (1) year of pediatric perfusion experience preferred.
- Eligibility to challenge certification with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (cscp.ca web site defines requirements for international eligibility).
- The ability to work well in a challenging work environment with highly skilled professionals.
