Organ Donation Specialist

Regular Full-Time

Vancouver, BC 

 

Reporting to the Clinical Operations Manager, the Organ Donation Specialist functions as an integral part of the ODHD Team, and as a provincial resource to critical care providers, assisting them through the various stages of organ donation and transplantation, including donor assessment and family support. This position is also responsible for the compilation and analysis of data for Quality Assurance, and for the formal development and delivery of educational programs on solid organ donation for health care professionals throughout the province of British Columbia (BC). Participation in an on-call rotation is required to ensure 24/7 program coverage.  This includes working days, evenings, nights, weekdays and weekends.

 

Example of Duties & Accountabilities 

  • Performs a variety of functions related to organ donation from deceased donors such as receiving and evaluating solid organ donor referrals, ensuring the option of donation is offered appropriately to every BC resident, supporting families through the donation process by enabling them to make an informed decision and striving to provide a positive and meaningful donation experience, assisting the healthcare provider team in the management of the deceased donor, coordinating many aspects of the donation process including suitability assessment of organs for transplantations, providing donor family support following a donation case, raising awareness of donation issues.
  • Provides consultation, guidance and advice on practice issues to hospital staff including physicians, nurses, social workers and pastoral care staff, as the provincial resource on organ donation, retrieval and transplant.
  • Makes decisions that impact the accuracy, reliability and acceptability of further processes within BCT and donor hospitals, affect the well-being of hospital staff, donor families and waitlisted transplant candidates, and affect the delivery of donation and transplantation services province-wide.
  • Contributes to continuous quality improvement by collecting and reporting data, and providing on-going education to the hospital and transplant communities.
  • Organizes investigative screening procedures and diagnostic tests with laboratories, agencies and hospital departments, ensures documentation and fulfillment of legal, ethical and medical criteria for organ retrieval including brain death and consent for organ donation, and logistical arrangements for the organ retrieval surgery.
  • Participates in training and on-going professional development within the relevant areas of practice and participates in the training, monitoring and precepting and evaluation of performance of new staff.
  • Participates in a 24-hour call rotation which may be physically demanding 

Qualifications

 

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in a Health Sciences Program, and three to five (3-5) years of critical care or organ donation experience; certification or equivalent experience in the education of public and health-care personnel. Designation as a healthcare professional in the critical care setting (nursing, respiratory therapy, social work, Physician's Assistant, Nurse Practitioner) preferred.

 

Demonstrated ability to negotiate and facilitate consensus within the donation and transplantation stakeholder community. Demonstrated knowledge and abilities in the areas of program development and implementation, quality improvement, leadership, management and professional education, including knowledge of adult education principles and methods. The position requires compassionate, dedicated and professional leadership skills and requires a highly motivated individual with excellent organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and establish effective working relationships within the multi-disciplinary hospital environment. Demonstrated ability to manage numerous concurrent tasks in a high stress environment. Demonstrated strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills with all levels of personnel in the health care field with the ability to interpret and communicate complex clinical information. Demonstrated excellent facilitation and conflict resolution skills. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment including computer literacy in programs such as Word and Excel and knowledge of patient information systems
