Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN), Induction provides support to the unit by coordinating the induction schedule. The induction nurse collaborates with the Labour + Delivery Charge Nurse, SRMC Charge Nurse and the UCC Triage Nurse, as well as providing nursing care to childbearing women and their families during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods of pregnancy. This will include maternal and fetal surveillance, patient support and specialized/emergency care, teaching, counselling, and liaising with support services to promote maternal/fetal and newborn well being.

Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Coordinates the inductions in collaboration with the Labour + Delivery Charge Nurse, physician/midwife and the outpatient clinic by reviewing induction requests and determining priorities based on the clinical diagnosis and the safe operation of the Maternal/Newborn Program.
2. Contacts patients according to the priority list in order to plan their admission, including care instructions and acquiring health status.
3. In collaboration with the woman, the primary care physician/midwife and other health care providers, admits the woman to the Induction area.
4. Conducts comprehensive assessment of woman and her unborn baby/babies on admission and at regular internals by performing assessment skills such as abdominal palpation, pelvic examination, monitoring of maternal vital signs, and interpretation of fetal heart surveillance.
5. Plans the in-hospital experience in collaboration with the patient, her family and the physician/midwifery team. Refers the patient to additional support services as needed, e.g. dietary, physiotherapy, social services, and others.
6. Administers medication as ordered.
7. Creates a therapeutic environment philosophy by providing patient/family teaching and counselling.
8. Initiates emergency care for the high risk patient/fetus/newborn in crisis, while obtaining immediate assistance from relevant resources on the health care team.
9. Provides support to the Urgent Care Centre staff utilization needs as required.
10. Participates in the Induction Committee, including attendance at monthly meetings and providing input on efficiency of the system, barrier to access, and patient information materials.

14. Supports research by providing information on research projects or by supporting research coordinators to identify potential patients for research projects.

Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Two years of recent perinatal nursing experience, with 18 months being in Labour and Delivery. This will include one year of high risk labour delivery within the last 3 years.
• Completion of the BCWH Urgent Care Centre education (“Assessment Room Course”) or comparable and a minimum of two years recent Urgent Care experience at BCWH.
• A minimum of two years BCWH Charge Nurse Experience including Charge Nurse in LDR.
• Current status: BCWH Fetal Health Surveillance Recertification Course.
• Current CPR/Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
