The Network Edge Specialist reports to the manager and/or designate and operates within a complex multi-site environment, providing and maintaining complex data communications infrastructure for the health authorities.  The Network Edge Specialist participates in the planning and recommending hardware and software upgrades, applying corrective maintenance to ensure an updated, secure, reliable, and efficient network edge infrastructure. The role utilizes expert knowledge of network security concepts and best practices, and networking principles, protocols, and technologies, to perform operational maintenance, support, and troubleshooting duties. The Network Edge Specialist utilizes and maintains current knowledge of network hardware components such as routers, switches, firewalls, access points, and associated configurations and with network cabling, wiring standards, and physical network setup.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Conducts needs analysis, assesses user needs/requirements, recommends hardware, specifies cabling needs, maps installation requirements, provides implementation cost estimates, and coordinates project information with other teams.
2. Completes user impact assessments, in alignment with established change management processes and communicates any potential impacts for operational network changes.
3. Responds to incidents, service requests, and assigned problems by applying expert knowledge to investigate, diagnose, and remediate any issues within the supported network.
4. Develops accurate and detailed network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and troubleshooting steps. Communicates technical concepts to non-technical users.
5. Documents network incidents, resolutions, and system changes. Enters data into a database to track cabling details and produce electrical schematic diagrams for record-keeping purposes.
6. Updates documentation and reports related to hardware and cabling installations.
7. Prepares work plans for implementation of network hardware or cable plant upgrades or replacements.
8. Assesses product design and costs, evaluates current network, prepares detailed implementation plans and timeframe, organizes vendor demonstrations, and assists in producing and evaluating requests for proposals. Coordinates with external parties for cabling and other external supported networking systems.
9. Monitors network health, performance, and security. Configures and manages network devices using network management software. Analyses network traffic and identifies performance bottlenecks.
10. Monitors network reports, identifies and resolves hardware failures, high utilization levels, and unauthorized access to ensure efficient operation of data networks. Takes immediate action to resolve technical incidents and problems.
11. Diagnoses and resolves network issues. Identifies and resolves network issues. Troubleshoots network connectivity, performance, and security problems.
12. Installs, configures, tests and upgrades network hardware components, including routers, switches, and network interface cards (NICs). Installs, configures, and tests communication, network operating systems and related network software.
13. Maintains network links, reconfigures equipment programming, assesses system redundancies, and designs and programs as required.
14. Completes assigned work tasks for complex data network projects and monitors progress to ensure project deliverables are met.
15. Ensures compliance with organizational policies and standards for installations, hardware maintenance, and user security access. Ensures proper installation and maintenance of equipment and monitor control protocols.
16. Performs Network Edge Analyst duties.
17. Perform other related duties as assigned.
    
    

 

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from a recognized degree or diploma program in Computer Science, three years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
