In accordance with established standards, policies and procedures, the Clinical Site Coordinator is accountable for the overall effectiveness of the Bed Access and Utilization program. The Site Coordinator utilizes a cross-program perspective to prioritize and support the appropriate patient placement and flow, bed utilization and the use of staffing resources across the site, particularly in the initial management of complex or critical patient situations and/or circumstances of ""Overcapacity"" or Emergency Responses and Codes. As part of the Bed Access and Utilization Program, the Clinical Site Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of operations across the BC Children's Hospital site, including the on-campus Healthy Minds and Children's Development and Rehabilitation programs. The Clinical Site Coordinator collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare providers and supervises, directs, coaches and mentors the nursing staff to ensure the provision of quality patient care and to maximize efficient patient flow on the inpatient units. The Clinical Site Coordinator is responsible for the overall supervision, hiring, deployment, support, and performance management of the Nursing Resource team.

Duties/Accountabilities:

  1. Provides systematic hospital-wide oversight of patient care and bed management issues: assesses situations, prioritizes and implements immediate action concerning critical issues. Works collaboratively and strategically with nursing staff, management and physicians in the identification and resolution of patient care, staff, administrative and site operation issues.
  2. Supervises the clinical performance of the Nursing Resource Team and completes annual performance reviews. Consults with Program Manager regarding performance issues and implementation of learning plans as required. Participates in defining the educational requirements of the Nursing Resource Team and develops plans for continuing education programs in conjunction with the clinical educator and management.
  3. Conducts bed utilization meetings to determine status of patient census on units, bed availability, patient placements and staffing resources. Supports Charge Nurses in decision-making to facilitate optimal patient care, placement and resource management. Liaises with community hospitals to identify bed availability.
  4. Communicates significant clinical or operational issues and/or events with Program Managers and the Program Manager/Director-on-call such as patient/family social situations, bed management and staffing issues, and critical events.
  5. Acts as a clinical and administrative resource to nursing staff, students, and other members of interdisciplinary teams and interprets organizational and professional policies and standards. Facilitates problem-solving in relation to clinical practice, anticipates potential concerns, and mentors staff on organizing and prioritizing workloads as required, ensuring efficient flow of patients through the system.
  6. Coordinates initial Emergency Response and Code procedures and assumes role of Incident Commander until Program Manager/Director available.
  7. Manages the operation and placement of the Nursing Resource Team and supports the delivery of direct/indirect patient care considering budgeted resources. Assists with the coordination of patient assignments, develops rotations, and approves vacation, short-term leaves and overtime. Fills vacancies and reassigns/adjusts work assignments as required to ensure safe and effective care delivery and appropriate use of resources, particularly in response to any critical incident. Liaises with the Scheduling office/ Charge Nurses regarding staffing concerns.
  8. Oversees the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of applicants for positions on the Nursing Resource Team. Makes recommendations to Program Managers regarding staffing plans. In conjunction with the Program Manager, reviews staff AWPP annually.
  9. Participates in the development, delivery and evaluation of the Nursing Resource Team orientation, in conjunction with other members of the health care team.
  10. Works with Program Managers toward resolution of employee issues up to step two of the grievance procedure.
  11. In collabpration with the Program Manager or delegate, develops and monitors assigned program/service area(s), including policies, procedures, and standards; promotes best practices, quality improvement and advancements in assigned program area(s). Maintains a current understanding and knowledge of emerging issues, trends, policy, clinical practice and research.
  12. Partcipates in descision-making relating to planning, budgeting, bed utilization, staff allocation and process improvements.  Represents the Access and Utilization team at the broader organizational level as required.  
  13. Facilitates implementation of required changes, utilizing Change Management theory and practice.
  14. Maintains awareness of current provincial, national, and global developments and trends and participates in activities for evaluation and advancement of quality patient care.
  15. Performs other duties as required.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education, Training and Experience

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing. Three (3) year’s recent, tertiary experience in pediatrics, including one year’s recent experience in a supervisory/leadership capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current practising registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Current CPR certification.
