The Associate Physician, Acute Mental Health Team, practices under the direction and supervision of an attending Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at BC Children’s Hospital. The Associate Physician provides assessment and short-term treatment for patients who present with mental health concerns to the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), are admitted to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency (CAPE) Unit, and/or followed in the Link Urgent Mental Health Clinic (the Link).

 

As an integral member of BC Children’s Hospital’s Acute Mental Health Team, the Associate Physician will provide support that increases capacity and service delivery in the Acute Mental Health service, through each of these mental health services (emergency, unit, clinic). The Associate Physician will be a full member of the Department of Psychiatry at BC Children’s Hospital.

 

Specific Accountabilities

 

Medical Expertise

  • Participate in ED mental health rounds, including mental health nursing, social work and psychiatry, as well as medical learners.
  • Support other areas of the Acute Mental Health Team in the Link and CAPE Unit as needed, when the ED is not busy.
  • Assist in the triage of patient presentations to the ED in consideration of ED team referral to the Link Clinic for follow up and assessment within 72 hours.
  • Perform and document psychiatric assessments, risk assessments, medication reconciliation, and safety planning for patients referred to Mental Health by the Emergency Physician. These tasks must meet Royal College and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines.

 

Referrals & Liaison

  • Complete referrals to community resources and/or the Link at BC Children’s Hospital.
  • Communicate with caregiver families, consultant physicians, Emergency Physicians, and community care resources and Family Physicians regarding patient management plans.

 

Professional Development – Self & Others

  • Provide teaching and supervision for medical students, residents, patients and families, as well as interdisciplinary staff within and outside of the ED.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects improving care for this patient population, including participation in Morbidity & Mortality rounds and other Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance or research sessions.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities (a minimum of 50 hours per year, 25 hours of which must be accredited training recognized by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons’ Maintenance of Certification Program for specialty health care professionals or the BC College of Family Physicians Maintenance of Certification Program.

 

Qualifications 

 

This position requires a medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Applicants must have completed a minimum of two years of accredited postgraduate training in Psychiatry (General, Adult, or Child and Adolescent), Pediatrics, or Family Medicine, with training verified to the satisfaction of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC). Applicants must meet the CPSBC English language proficiency requirements, demonstrate current clinical practice as required by CPSBC, and be eligible for licensure in the Associate Physician class. Applicants must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or legally authorized to live and work in British Columbia.

 

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to beginning and continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.

 

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.

 

 

Salary Range: $90,770 - $141,494 per annum. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.

Hours of Work: 
Monday – Friday; Primarily daytime and no overnight or weekend shifts expected.
