Job Summary:

Working within the assigned clinical program, the Clinical Instructor participates in the design and development of course materials and processes to promote continuous quality improvement; promotes and models family centered care and applies and facilitates the educational process using principles of adult learning and competency based education in all educational activities; utilizes specialized nursing knowledge and expertise in surgery to guide students in the provision of safe care in the clinical area. Consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members and educators to coordinate activities and experiences, to ensure a positive learning environment. Evaluates student progress and resolves difficult clinical situations. Duties include preparing interactive lecture sessions, observing, supporting and guiding students in clinical setting, acting as a resource for students, evaluating student progress, acting as a liaison between the training program and hospital personnel, maintaining training records and manuals and participating in direct patient care as necessary. The Clinical Instructor promotes education practices that are consistent with established policies, standards and strategic directions of Children’s and Women’s Hospital.

Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Participates in program design and development by incorporating theoretical concepts and research relevant specialties. Provides input on existing tools and processes and coordinating appropriate teaching methods and strategies to the program content.
2. Develops, reviews and modifies learning resources, such as student workbooks, unit specific manuals, clinical checklists and competency statements to ensure that they are current, relevant and reflect best practice. Initiates strategies to improve program content and delivery.
3. Orientates students and new hires to the unit by touring the area, reviewing hospital specific policies, protocols and procedures and introducing students to perioperative staff. Acts as a liaison between current staff and students/new hires.
4. Coordinates students/ new hires clinical instruction by setting measurable student goals and objectives, matching assignments with student learning needs, communicating student specific teaching strategies to room staff and collaborating with room staff to ensure appropriate experience is provided. Observes students in their clinical practice and provides ongoing feedback to ensure adherence to departmental and training program standards.
5. Utilizes a variety of classroom and clinical teaching methods to meet desired learner outcomes such as formal presentations, demonstrations, simulations, interactive exercises, and critical thinking questions/scenarios and post conferences to discuss application of theory to practice.
6. Maintains student records including evaluations/progress reports, clinical competency assessments.
7. Evaluates student/new hire clinical and classroom progress by utilizing established evaluation tools such as continuing observation, feedback from room staff pertaining to student performance in specific clinical situations, student clinical evaluation documents, skills checklists, post-tests and midterm/final examinations.
8. Assists students to meet program competencies by outlining expectations, reviewing learning needs, creating learning strategies and coordinating resources to facilitate student success. Assumes responsibility for students achieving program objectives.
9. Acts as a mentor and role model for students and staff and participates in organizational initiatives to promote professionalism and best practice.
10. Maintains own clinical competency and knowledge by researching current developments in relevant nursing theory and practice, updating clinical experience, consulting with interdisciplinary team members and attending education seminars/lectures/courses.
11. Collaborates with the program manager to create an individual plan for continuous professional growth and development. Sets measurable goals and objectives and reviews progress to ensure goals are achieved within established time frames.
12. Ensures a safe and healthy workplace for patients/clients and staff through methods such as effective orientation, training, promotion and monitoring of safe work practices and enforcement of health and safety requirements. Reports unsafe situations; investigates and takes corrective action and/or notifies appropriate personnel.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Five (5) years of recent, related experience in a broad range of clinical specialties, including one (1) year related experience with mentoring and/or preceptoring, facilitating group processes.
• Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
