Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Working without general supervision, the Music Therapist provides music therapy support for cancer patients and their families within Vancouver.  In conjunction with the applicable Provincial and Regional Leaders; plans, organizes and develops music therapy programs for targeted patient populations.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    In conjunction with the Director, Psychosocial Oncology and Clinical Coordinators, assesses needs, plans, implements and evaluates music therapy care for individual patients, groups of patients or families.

2.    Works as part of an interdisciplinary team with health care professionals as required to ensure optimum patient care.

3.    Participates in quality improvement programs by maintaining written records of patient care activities; maintains, compiles and reports workload statistics and clinical reports consistent with established standards.

4.    Maintains equipment, supplies and other music therapy aids, including identifying requirements for program approval.

5.    Supervises students and completes evaluation forms as delegated by Clinical Coordinators.

6.    Participates in education programs related to expressive therapy modalities for various levels of health care providers, patients and families, including orientation and in-service programs.

7.    Participates in protocol development and data collection for research and program evaluation projects as directed.

8.    Provides music therapy assessments and treatments using recognized music therapy techniques and practices.  Consult with members of the interdisciplinary team to select and/or recommend appropriate music therapy programs according to needs of patients.

9.    Provides support to other therapeutic programs, such as group support and relaxation sessions, as directed.

10.    Maintains knowledge of current developments in music therapy by reviewing professional literature, consulting with other professionals and participating in approved educational programs.

11.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Baccalaureate degree in Music Therapy from an university accredited by the Canadian Association for Music Therapy.  
•    One (1) year’s recent experience providing music therapy services in a health care setting,
•    Eligible for registration with the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT) and Music Therapy Association of BC (MTABC).
