Graphics and Production Specialist

Job Summary:

In accordance with the mission, vision, values and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Communications Officer at the Office of Virtual Health, the Graphics & Production Specialist provides technical guidance and produces educational materials and other collaterals to support the strategic and operational priorities for a group of provincial health improvement networks. The Specialist works independently with program staff on various projects to ensure that objectives and timelines are met. The Specialist provides graphic design support, as well as technical assistance and consults with program leadership in designing/preparing a variety of informational material. The Specialist manages documentation as per Provincial Health Services Authority requirements and is responsible for ensuring that the PHSA style guide and privacy regulations are being followed.

Duties/Accountabilities:

• Provides technical assistance in developing educational material in conjunction with working groups and committees, including provincial guidelines, clinical care algorithms, protocols and patient/care provider tools.
• Designs and produces surveys used by committees and the program(s); ensures all surveys and materials meet privacy regulations.
• Consults with program leadership on the design of graphic materials to support strategic and operational priority initiatives for the program. Designs a variety of material including templates, posters, brochures, pamphlets, information postcards; receives information such as intended message, content details, expected audience, budget and design concepts and prepares rough layouts by hand and/or computer software programs. Creates layout in appropriate software packages; edits for visual consistency taking into consideration reproduction methods and forwards for approval.
• Manipulates text, illustrations, photos, video and/or sound; maintains the image bank; removes distortions and enhances photos by colour correcting, sharpening images, removing unwanted portions and fitting image into page layout to obtain desired effect; creates illustrations by accessing appropriate graphic software to produce the required illustration; ensures objects are drawn to scale; assists with still photography and videography at events and other initiatives.
• Arranges for printing of materials by methods such as setting items up as reader and printer spreads, transfers spreads to portable storage, contacts printing to discuss timelines and special needs; completes requisition forms and provides portable storage devices for reproduction.
• Responsible for planning, tracking and researching external vendors; coordinates production and scheduling, preparing cost scenarios; reviews and obtains quotes within designated budget, ensures fiscal responsibility on costs for all printed and digital projects.
• Offers technical and design expertise regarding website and intranet site and updates as necessary; provides guidance and training to other program staff around updating website and intranet site where appropriate.
• Provides technical advice and work guidance to staff on graphic design, page layout, photo editing/formatting, scanning, illustration and preparation of files for printing.
• Researches a variety of sources such as the internet, graphic software, books and magazines to obtain graphic illustrations for use in productions; obtains copies and ensures compliance with copyright rules.
• Provides advice regarding privacy legislation compliance in the development of surveys, questionnaires and promotional campaigns.

Qualifications:

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Communications Technology, Graphic Design or a related field and five (5) years of graphic design experience.
Demonstrated experience in the execution and design of print and digital marketing materials as well as clinical care tools such as algorithms, protocols and care guidelines. Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders in the development of materials designed to achieve a specific goal. Strong organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines. Solid digital and print production and creative thinking skills. Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills including verbal and written.
