Under the direction of the Program Manager/Designate, the clinical nurse leader co-ordinates staffing coverage and provides clinical supervision, guidance and support to the nursing and support staff within the surgical services unit, consistent with established policies, standards of practice, and philosophy at BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre.

A first in Canada: minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are being introduced in B.C.! Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Co-ordinates and supervises the work of nurses and support staff by making and adjusting patient assignments, scheduling and co-ordinating the use of staff, evaluating the work of others and providing written and or spoken feedback to the Program Manager/Designate.

2.  Co-ordinates the activities of the area by communicating and planning with the Program Manager/Designate methods of monitoring patient care needs, identifying and reporting staffing, equipment and administrative requirements on a day-to-day basis.

3. Improves performance and assures maximum utilization of staff through role modelling, teaching, and ongoing development of personal and professional skills to meet the needs of the patients, families and staff.  Assists the Program Manager/Designate in determining and meeting the educational needs of
individual staff members and groups of staff members by providing input on their competencies.

4. Provides verbal and written input to the Surgical Services leadership team into the development, implementation and evaluation of the Surgical Services patient care standards and policies and procedures.

5. Assists with communication processes internal and external to the Surgical Services unit through participation in both Program-specific and hospital-wide working groups and committees.

6. Acts as a clinical resource/support person to patients and families; and nursing and health care professionals as required by explaining the theoretical rationale for nursing decisions.  Resolves problems, utilizing the nursing process, related to patient care with the Program Manager/Designate to ensure quality patient care.

7. Participates in quality improvement initiatives through activities such as following up incident reports and assisting with the identification and monitoring of trends.  Provides input into monthly variance reports through consultation with the Program Manager/Designate.

8. Monitors, evaluates, and makes recommendations regarding the purchase of equipment and supplies.

9. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and staff by following established emergency procedures and safety practices and procedures.

10. Promotes the implementation and evaluation of nursing research and quality monitoring activities as directed by participating in nursing committees, and by keeping current through attendance at education and in-service opportunities.

11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience


• Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Perioperative certification, PACU and/or Critical Care certification and five (5) years’ recent nursing experience which includes a minimum of three (3) years’ recent OR/PACU experience, and one (1) year supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
