Job Summary

Salary Range: $49,445-$64,897/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Manager, Research and Knowledge Translation or designate, the Communications Assistant is responsible for providing support for a wide range of administrative duties that are pertinent to providing communications support to staff and investigators at the Women's Health Research Institute. These duties include but are not limited to: creating news stories and conducting researcher interviews, editing and formatting reports, creating articles for posting on newsletters, websites and social media channels and assisting with updating webpages on the research institute website.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Under the direction of the Manager, creates news stories and information summaries for WHRI e-newsletters, website, social media and other publications. Collates and synthesizes information into a written format such as reports and articles for various WHRI web and print communications.
- Updates investigator web profiles and other website pages. Posts social media updates on Facebook and Twitter.
- Assists with event promotion and organization as needed, including preparing and disseminating event posters, social media posts and emails.
- Collects communications data and updates databases with information on WHRI media coverage and research stories. Collects metrics data for WHRI social media channels and prepares metrics summary reports as directed by the Manager, Research and Knowledge Translation or designate.
- Conducts interviews with WHRI investigators, trainees and staff to create news stories regarding ongoing research projects and initiatives for the purposes of promoting research via communication channels (i.e. e-newsletters, web stories and social media posts).
- Assists with the monthly communications meeting and develops the meeting agenda in consultation with the Executive Director. Gathers background materials and documents specific to communications topics relevant to the communications meeting.
- Responds to verbal and written communication and liaises internally and externally to respond to, share information and clarify details on specific communications initiatives, events, news stories and social media posts.
- Maintains databases and online surveys and enters communications data as required.
Qualifications:
- A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Diploma in a field such as Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related discipline and three (3) years of recent, related experience, preferably in a health research environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of journalistic writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge of media production methods.
- Knowledge of scientific terminology and research methodology in the health sector.
- Proficiency in computer applications using word processing, database and internet applications and tools.
- Ability to apply sound communication skills and organize various data for record and collection purposes.
- Understanding of internal and external communication issues.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion while using confidential information.
- Effective oral and written communications skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
