Job Summary

Salary Range: $90,770-$130,481/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.

The Provincial Practice Leader (PPL) provides leadership on a provincial level to further the advancement of breast imaging practice consistent with the standards set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR), and Health Canada.  The PPL is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan for the technologist component of the BC Cancer Breast Screening Program (the Program) including role development, recruitment, performance enhancement, and continuous technical professional development.  The PPL participates in the evaluation of imaging technical competency at the screening centres, including periodic image audits and site visits, assessment of the individual technical skills, competency assessment, and advising on continued viability of a centre’s operation.

The PPL provides technical leadership and expertise to support efficient and effective operation at the screening centres by performing tasks such as, advising on the technical aspects of budget planning including staffing standards, imaging equipment, and equipment maintenance, repairs and replacement, establishing and monitoring technical quality assurance activities, and advising centres on issues related to technologist productivity, client relation/interaction, screening appointment scheduling, technical staff training and quality management.

Duties/Accountabilities:

  • Fosters a culture, in collaboration with Breast Screening Program leaders, which recognizes and responds to technologist professional practice issues through activities such as mentoring, coaching, team building and resource identification.
  • Develops and implements processes and communication to ensure Program imaging quality and safety standards are maintained across the province by performing tasks such as periodic image audits and quality management site visits, monitoring of repeat rates and other quality indicators, implementing technical acceptance process for new centre start-up, and following up on technical issues identified on physicist site visits and other quality assurance activities, including facilitation to problem-solve and provision of technical in-services.  
  • Champions the Province-wide CAR accreditation by coordinating CAR activities and follow-up with the physicists, screening centre technologists and radiologists, and providing technical support and advice to the screening centres during the accreditation process.
  • Develops and implements professional practice standards for Program technologists integrating national and provincial practice standards and ergonomic, safety and quality service guidelines.
  • Recognizes and investigates mammography technologist recruitment/retention issues, and brings forward recommendations to resolve issues including budget ramifications.
  • Supports promotion of medical imaging in mammography through activities such as outreaching to schools, coordinating student training at Program Centres, developing, implementing and monitoring a mentorship program, and developing web-based and/or media-based professional awareness campaigns.
  • Identifies and creates Program related technical professional continuing education opportunities such as the topics and format of the technologist program at the Breast Screening Educational Forum, customer focused quality service workshops, and site specific in-services to improve positioning and imaging quality.
  • In collaboration with the Medical Physicist Quality Assurance group, plans and coordinates equipment selection by performing tasks such as determining equipment needs and replacement schedule, defining equipment specifications for tendering, participates in equipment selection, and coordinating equipment acceptance.
  • In collaboration with the Medical Physicist Quality Assurance Group, the Program Medical Director, and the Program Operations Director, develops and monitors Program policies, guidelines, procedures and standards for the technical operation and quality management processes, and maintains related documentation such as manuals, computer files and reference materials.
  • Co-chairs the Physicist Quality Assurance Group, and provides technical expertise to other Program Administration staff and the screening centres on issues related to equipment service maintenance and repairs, technical staffing standards, technical operation processes, centre technical competency, including budget planning and issuance of recommendation to cease centre operation for technical reasons.
  • Liaises and provides specialized knowledge to define, clarify, enlarge upon or sharpen procedure or capabilities to external organizations including CAMRT, CAR Mammography Accreditation Program, other Provincial Screening Programs, education consultants and equipment and service vendors.
  • Responds to client and general inquiries relating to technologist practices, issues and standards.
  • Promotes the involvement of technologist in interdisciplinary research to disseminate research findings and new knowledge through local, regional, national and international presentations and publications.
  • Maintains clinical competency through professional development and practical application.

Qualifications:

  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree in Arts or Science from an accredited university program plus current registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), CAMRT Certificate on Breast Imaging (CBI) plus five (5) years of clinical experience in breast imaging including two (2) years of experience with a Provincial screening mammography program consisting of fixed and mobile operations.  Plus two (2) years of supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience and/or training in adult education.  
  • Leadership ability to engender a team environment committed to continuous improvement based management through coaching, change management, facilitation and implementation skills.
  • Ability to problem-solve and make decisions independently.  
  • Ability to develop courses, workshops and other professional development strategies.  
  • The ability and willingness to travel.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and software.
