Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Professional Practice Leader, Pharmacy, is responsible for planning, organizing and controlling activities in the Cancer Centre, Pharmacy Department, to ensure optimum delivery of oncology pharmacy services. Supervises designated staff.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Provides input to the development and review of systemic therapy program goals and standards.

2.    Works in conjunction with the Provincial Pharmacy Director and other systemic therapy program staff to develop and maintain departmental, professional standards with regard to training, staff education, quality management, workload measurement, patient care and research.

3.    Provides regular workload and drug cost reports to the Provincial Pharmacy Director.

4.    Participates in systemic therapy program activities relating to drug utilization, education and others as required.

5.    Participates on systemic therapy program and Agency committees representing Pharmacy.

6.    Formulates goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the Pharmacy.

7.    Plans, organizes and delegates work assignments and responsibilities.  Provides work direction and supervision to professional and technical staff.
8.    Interviews and selects applicants for vacant positions. Evaluates staff and monitors performance by conducting annual appraisals. Advises the Provincial Pharmacy Director, as required, regarding disciplinary matters.

9.    Prepares and monitors departmental budget; initiates recommendations regarding staffing and cost effectiveness as appropriate.  Budgets chemotherapy drug costs and reviews period reports relating to drug therapy for the FVC.

10.    Monitors and takes measures to improve the utilization of resources within the Department (e.g. relating to workload to budget and staffing) and regularly reports departmental workload statistics to the Provincial Pharmacy Director.

11.    Ensures proper maintenance of inventory for drugs and supplies by reviewing the requirements based on the Centre’s activities.

12.    Represents the Department on Centre committees as required.

13.    Liaises with the Pharmacy Department at the host hospital to ensure that appropriate pharmaceutical care is maintained between outpatient (Centre) and inpatient (Hospital) services.  Develops and maintains mechanisms to transfer information relating to oncology drug therapy for those patients utilizing a combination of both services.

14.    Implements pharmacy component of new chemotherapy protocols.

15.    Performs other related duties of a staff pharmacist as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Current licensure with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
•    Completion of a hospital Pharmacy Residency.
•    Completion of the Canadian Hospital Association course in Hospital Department Management or equivalent.
•    Current four (4) years' related experience including two (2) years in an administrative supervisor position.
•    Recent clinical experience in oncology pharmacy.

Skills and Abilities

•    Demonstrated knowledge and experience with computerized pharmacy systems, and familiarity with other software applications (e.g. Excel, Word).
•    Effective verbal and written communication skills.
•    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi disciplinary team with all levels of Centre staff, patients, the public and external health professionals.
•    Demonstrated skills in CPR techniques.
