Reporting to the Senior Leader, Practice Education, the Paramedic Practice Educator is responsible for the consistent and effective delivery of education ranging from new employee orientation to advanced continued paramedic education. Additionally, the role would be responsible for the development of selected preceptors while ensuring all preceptor activities are consistent province wide. Working in a team-based environment, the Paramedic Practice Educator is accountable for the continuing education, delivery and field learning support of employees. Paramedic Practice Educators are expected to act in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures, clinical practice guidelines, organizational and EMALB scope of practice, and appropriate legislation. Paramedic Practice Educators act as ambassadors for practice development including, trialing, evaluating and championing clinical initiatives relevant to the delivery of patient care in BCEHS services.
Key Accountabilities
- Perform all key accountabilities of the Paramedic role.
- Responsible for developing and evaluating paramedic education programs in collaboration with BCEHS internal and external stakeholders.
- Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and procedural reference documents. Using established educational standards, determines match between content and delivery method. Provides feedback to all stakeholders to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.
- Facilitates and assesses field and classroom practice by supporting, coaching and being a clinical resource through demonstration of expertise and leadership in paramedic practice.
- Identifies, develops and implements customized learning plans, under the direction of and in collaboration with the responsible supervisor or delegate to meet individual learning needs and organizational objectives of competencies related to key performance indicators.
- Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning and patient outcomes using program/resource evaluation and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.
- Participates in various initiatives as a paramedic education resource, providing input and recommendations related to educational requirements and process improvements.
- Provides consultation to staff regarding professional development, paramedic practice education and/or career planning by maintaining interpersonal contact and observation, and by providing feedback for team members. Recommends educational programs/resources and facilitates professional growth and learning plans with new employees.
- Coordinates placements and preceptor assignments in collaboration with the Senior Leader and other team members.
- Participates in organizational approved research and special projects. Methods may include identifying research topics/issues, promoting staff awareness, supporting evidence-based pre-hospital care practice and/or gathering and summarizing data to improve education and operational effectiveness.
- Ensures BCEHS educational programs are in compliance with provincial regulators/safety authorities, PHSA and BCEHS standards, organizational goals, values and policies. Engages and collaborates with internal/external stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulations and policy, timely investigation of issues/incidents, and proactively report and resolve safety or labor related concerns.
- Contributes to, promotes and leads, an organizational culture that is patient focused, supportive and respectful of all employees embracing BCEHS guiding principles and values ensuring that all interactions are performed with professionalism, courtesy, dignity and respect.
- Fosters a positive work environment that empowers and encourages employees to realize their maximum potential, creates commitment, ownership and personal growth. Develops a culture of continuous learning by building healthy relationships and precepting others. Supports and actively participates in employee recognition processes.
- Refers employees to access support services and assists in facilitating access to Critical Incident Stress Management and debriefing support.
- Maintains educational requirements of BCEHS and license requirements of the provincial regulator.
- Ensures staff and patient confidentiality are always maintained.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of BCEHS Clinical Practice Guidelines, BCEHS Scope of Operational Clinical Practice, BCEHS Standards of Competency and Professional Practice, policies and procedures, organizational standards and province-wide geography.
- Knowledge of quality improvement methodology and its application.
- Ability to adapt education approach to reflect educational participants’ requirements, local needs, and national trends.
- Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the province of British Columbia
- Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting needs assessments and in curriculum development.
- Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
- Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
- Ability to assess educational participants’ performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback.
- Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants and field staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal).
- Ability to work cooperatively within diverse work teams (internal and external) while maintaining professional, courteous, respectful relationships with all stakeholders.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities specifically around paramedic practices and procedures.
- Demonstrate the use of critical thinking and sound judgment when making decisions.
- Technological literacy across various platforms and devices.
- Physical ability and mental resilience to carry out the duties of the position.
Selection Criteria & Process
As per 13.03 of the collective agreement.
Essential Requirements:
- CUPE member
- Must have three (3) years plus a day of experience within BCEHS at the relevant Paramedic level as applicable.
- Satisfactory work record; must be maintained for the duration of this qualification
The above noted qualifiers must be achieved by the closing of the posting per standard selection processes for CUPE 873 employees.
Selection Process:
- Knowledge/Skills Assessment (45% of total score)
Applicants will be required to successfully complete a knowledge/skills assessment at a passing rate of 75%. This assessment is online through the Learning Hub and must be completed from a location with reliable internet access. The online assessment will be sent to qualified candidates’ BCEHS email and will be available for a 24-hour period. Eligible applicants will be notified of the exam date(s) at least 7 days in advance.
- Interview (45% of total score)
Applicants who successfully achieve a score of 75% or higher on the Knowledge/Skills Assessment will be scheduled to interview. Eligible applicants will be notified of the interview date(s) at least 7 days in advance. Please check your BCEHS email for interview invites if you are successful on the exam.
Should you be unsuccessful on the written exam or pass the exam but not participate in the interview process, you will be counted as "unsuccessful" and will not be eligible to compete on roles in the same classification for a period of 6 months.
- Full-Time Seniority (10% of total score)
Up to 10% will be applied to eligible candidates who complete the interview to determine their final score.
The successful candidate(s) shall be the employee(s) with the highest total score and a satisfactory disciplinary record.
Training: Successful candidates will be required to attend and successfully complete a variety of training, including but not limited to, courses, orientation, and field training.
