BCEHS Intends to fill 1 (one) vacancy for FT Regular Scheduled CCP ITT Paramedic Practice Educator reporting to Virtual Way, Vancouver BC. May include significant travel around the province to deliver training.

Reporting to the Clinical Care and Flight Education Manager, the Practice Educator works in a team-based environment and is accountable for; implementation and maintenance of practice; supporting provincial direction on practice needs and plans; and implementing and evaluating changes to practice.

 

Duties

  • Responsible for education development for practice education programs utilizing educational/curriculum theory and knowledge of specialized clinical practice to design, develop, implement and evaluate practice education programs for team members in collaboration with BCEHS Learning Leadership Team, Medical programs and inter-professional team members. Practice education programs include orientation/training programs for new team members, educational support programs, and continuing education sessions.
  • Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and practice reference documents for team members. Using established educational standards, the Paramedic Practice Educator determines match between content and delivery method and provides feedback to all stakeholders to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.
  • Facilitates learning in the field and classroom by coaching and acting as a clinical resource and demonstrates expertise and leadership in paramedic practice through methods such as reviewing literature and developments in technology and equipment, consulting with community experts, evaluating clinical practice systems/standards, identifying new theories/trends/education programs, developing new/revised standards and presenting educational sessions based upon specialized body of knowledge to enhance quality patient care.
  • Identifies, develops and implements customized learning plans, in collaboration with the responsible supervisor or delegate to meet individual learning needs of staff allowing a paramedic to achieve the desired level of competency related to knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical judgments. Provides direct clinical instruction to new and existing staff as required and facilitates learning by role modeling direct patient care skills and practices to staff in a classroom or in the field, promoting skill development, observing staff while performing patient care, including documentation practices, and providing feedback to ensure care is provided according to practice standards and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning and patient outcomes using program/resource evaluation, utilization statistics, and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.
  • Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities through methods such as evaluating effect of changes in patient care practice, generating recommendations for alternative approaches, provides education to staff as a result of Patient Safety & Learning System reports, and recommending changes to selected policies, procedures or protocols; drafts new and/or revised procedures, standards and criteria for the program in conjunction with the inter-professional team. Initiates strategies to improve patient care using principles of continuous quality improvement to promote delivery of high quality educational services. 
  • Monitors, evaluates, and makes recommendations regarding the purchase of equipment as required.
  • Participates in provincial and regional groups as a clinical education resource, providing input and suggestions related to education implications and group processes of new initiatives to ensure that clinical educational needs are addressed. 
  • Documents educational process and utilization statistics by maintaining database and records, and by providing written and verbal reports to demonstrate accountability and to continuously improve the quality of clinical education services.
  • Provides consultation to staff regarding professional development, paramedic practice education and/or career planning by maintaining interpersonal contact and observation, providing verbal and written feedback for the individual to continue competency development, meeting with team members on a one-to-one basis and recommending educational programs/resources and facilitating development of learning and/or professional growth plans with new staff. 
  • Contributes to on-going staff performance by auditing and assessing performance during orientation, probation, skills review and education and training sessions and provides feedback to the learner to assist in development of a personal learning plan.
  • Participates in paramedic students' clinical experience by, coordinating student placements and preceptor assignments in collaboration with the Senior Leader, Learning & Clinical Initiatives and other team members.
  • Participates in approved paramedicine and inter-professional research and special projects through methods such as identifying research topics/issues, promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, supporting evidence-based pre-hospital care practice and gathering and summarizing data to improve education and clinical effectiveness.
  • Ensures BCEHS educational programs are in compliance with Work Safe BC (WSBC), PHSA and BCEHS Health & Safety standards, organizational goals, values and policies. Engages and collaborates with Patient Care Delivery, Safety Advisors and Workplace Health to ensure compliance with regulations and policy, timely investigation of issues/incidents, and proactively report and resolve safety or labor related concerns.
  • Contributes to, promotes and leads, an organizational culture that is patient focused, supportive and respectful of all employees embracing BCEHS guiding principles and values ensuring that all interactions are performed with professionalism, courtesy, dignity and respect.
  • Fosters a positive work environment that empowers and encourages employees to realize their maximum potential, creates commitment, ownership and personal growth.  Develops a ‘just culture’ and a culture of continuous learning by building healthy relationships and mentoring others. Supports and actively participates in employee recognition processes.

  • Support and assist frontline employees in accessing support services and assist in facilitating access to Critical Incident Stress Management and debriefing support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to adapt education approach to reflect requirements, local needs, and national trends.
  • Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the province of British Columbia
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
  • Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback.
  • Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants and field staff.
  • Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement methodology and its application.
  • A good understanding and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting needs assessments and in curriculum development.
  • Recent experience in a supervisory role. Good understanding of supervisory principles.

 

 

Essential Requirement:

 

There are significant travel requirements for this position.

  1. CUPE member
  2. Must have 3 years plus a day of experience within BCEHS at the relevant Paramedic Level: required CCP ITT license 
  3. Satisfactory work record; must be maintained for the duration of this qualification

Selection Criteria

  1. Knowledge/Skills Assessment (45% of total score)

Applicants will be required to successfully complete a knowledge/skills assessment. This assessment is online through the Learning Hub and must be completed from a location with reliable internet access.  Eligible applicants will be notified of the exam date via their BCEHS email address at least 7 days in advance.

        2. Interview (45% of total score)

Applicants who successfully achieve a score of 75% or higher on the Knowledge/Skills Assessment will be scheduled to interview. Please be aware, you will require access to a reliable internet connection and a web camera. It is recommended to use a laptop or desktop computer. We discourage the use of mobile devices for these activities. Eligible applicants will be notified of the interview date at least 7 days in advance.

 

Should you be unsuccessful on the written exam, or pass the exam but not participate in the interview process, you will be counted as "unsuccessful” and a score of 0 will be applied as your interview score and you will not be eligible to compete on roles in the same classification for a period of 6 months.

        3. Full-Time Seniority (Up to 10%)

Up to 10% will be applied to all candidates who complete the interview to determine their final score.

 

The successful candidate(s) shall be the employee(s) with the highest total score and a satisfactory disciplinary record.

 

Please note, employees accepting any Regular position under the Collective Agreement will not be entitled to rescind an accepted offer after 61 days of accepting the offer. Regular and Irregular employees may only rescind within 61 days after acceptance. You will also be required to report to your new position within the 61 days of acceptance. Employees that rescind an offer at any time arenot guaranteed to be placed back into their current/prior position.
