Salary Range: $90,770-$130,481/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
Job Summary:
The Senior Manager, Business Development & Contracts takes a leading role with respect to commercialization activities arising from research across PHSA. The Senior Manager, Business Development & Contracts manages processes on behalf of senior scientific, clinical and administrative staff and provides relevant business and legal expertise in determining commercialization strategies. The Senior Manager, Business Development & Contracts is responsible for reporting on business development and commercialization activities to the Director.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Drafts and negotiates the various contracts and agreements required for both industry and government sponsored research. Working with senior scientific, administrative and clinical staff, determines the most appropriate form of contract to govern research as well as identification of all potential encumbrances. Leads negotiation with external partner on behalf of PHSA to ensure consistency with PHSA policies.
- Takes a leading role in licensing Intellectual Property (IP) to local, national and international business partners. Provides advice on appropriate royalty structures including analyzing current market norms, preparing cash flow projections or replacement costs. Negotiates the business arrangement with the licensee including royalty rates, equity participation, reimbursement of costs, and appropriate due diligence provisions. Discusses the legal terms of the agreement with the licensee’s legal counsel, obtaining requisite approvals of the agreement, monitoring the licensee’s performance for compliance with the terms of the agreement.
- Provides input to senior staff concerning marketing of competing technologies and appropriate deal structures as these pertain to potential partners and/or licensors. Advises staff regarding best practices in relation to proposed partnerships with industry.
- Assists in the formation of spin-off companies through methods such as providing information and general assistance to researchers on issues regarding company formation, structure, management and financing.
- Leads negotiation, business contract administration and management of clinical agreements that support clinical research across BCCA regional centres, ensuring they comply with PHSA and BCCA policies, including risk management and research ethics board restrictions.
- Encourages and helps foster collaboration among scientists and clinicians within the organization and with outside institutions and industry partners.
- Monitors expenditures, and analyses and reports on variances.
Qualifications:
- A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Masters Degree supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years of recent related industry experience in the technology transfer field including leadership and managerial functions.
- Demonstrated expertise in business development activities is required.
- Good understanding of issues relating to protection of IP and ensuring equitable return to the PHSA and its agencies.
- Knowledge of the local as well as international biotech arena would prove invaluable.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively and maintain extensive contacts within the clinical, scientific and business communities, both locally and internationally.
- Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to write and present business cases.
- Proven ability to think creatively and develop ideas.
- Ability to write, read, and administer complex legal documents/contracts as they relate to technology transfer.
- Ability to integrate, present and effectively communicate complex business issues or information to a varied audience including scientists and clinicians and potential industry partners.
- Ability to lead groups of colleagues in multi-disciplinary projects.
- Ability to work in an integrated team environment and thus gain an understanding of the business opportunities.
