Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.The Pharmacy Assistant performs a variety of technical functions related to receiving and maintenance of pharmacy inventory, and dispensing and preparation of unit dose packages of medication.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Performs a variety of technical functions related to receiving and inventory maintenance through such activities as:
- Receiving and unpacking orders delivered by Stores.
- Storing and rotating stock as per established procedures.
- Monitoring and removing expired drugs from shelves and processing expired drugs for return credits.
- Completing and managing paperwork related to inventory management, such as purchase orders, credit requests, and financial reports and ensuring it is routed through the appropriate channels.
- Maintaining and updating the Purchasing and Receiving Inventory Module (PRIM) computer database.
- Developing, maintaining and updating computer spreadsheets and databases related to inventory management.
- Assisting with drug procurement from local external resources such as picking up drugs and completing paperwork for purchases.
- Assisting with periodic physical counts of drug inventory as required.
- Assisting Purchasing Technician by helping complete paperwork or period end reporting or answering questions about drug availability or cost.
- Performs technical functions related to unit dose pre-packing such as:
- Ensuring pre-packed inventories and supplies are maintained at established standards through inventory counts and filling of stock as necessary.
- Operating related equipment (i.e. pre-packing machine) to unit dose medications for inpatient use.
- Preparing, filling, labelling and checking expiry dates for unit dose cassettes and emergency and drug reaction trays.
- Performs other technical and clerical functions as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
- Completion of Grade 12, completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician course plus one (1) year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with all levels of professional staff and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all professional staff.
- Ability to type at 35 w.p.m.
- Knowledge of and experience with Pharmacy computer systems, Windows applications, spreadsheets and database programs such as Word, Excel and Access.
- Knowledge of and experience with procedures for safe handling of cytotoxic drugs.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
