Job Summary


Job Summary:

In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values and Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Under the direction of the Patient Services Director and in Collaboration with the Medical Director of the Renal Service, provides and coordinates nursing care services such as patient assessment, patient and family teaching hemodialysis unit procedures, and health promotion activities consistent with established policies, standards of practice and philosophy at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital.

A first in Canada: minimum Nurse‑to‑Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are being introduced in B.C.! The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), alongside B.C.'s other regional health authorities, is implementing mNPRs as a transformative staffing initiative that aims to improve the working environment of nurses in order to provide better quality care to our patients.


Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Initiates and coordinates assessment and post assessment referrals, responds to patient, family and health care member’s enquiries, and liaises with other support diagnostic/health services in coordinating patient referrals.

2.    Collects and documents patient health care information on patients and their families, maintains records of nursing observations, interventions, teaching and evaluation of nursing care.  Maintains records of telephone communications as well.

3.    Plans and coordinates patient care activities in the clinic or the renal unit.  Utilizes developmentally appropriate nursing skills and techniques, based o the age of the patient, in caring for pediatric patients.

4.    Collaborates in the planning of patient are with nursing staff, medical staff, health care disciplines, and community agencies/services to facilitate patient care in the clinic and inpatient areas.

5.    Provides direct patient care for children in the renal unit such as accessing shunts and monitoring dialysis procedures in the renal unit and in Intensive Care.

6.    Teaches patients, family members and other caregivers about management and treatment of their illness.  Provides and explains information and demonstrates self/home care skills for daily living, use of medication and equipment, and integration of illness into their lifestyle.  Revises teaching plans as required and includes patient/family in evaluating progress towards their learning goals.

7.    Participates in the orientation and continuing education of nursing staff and students by role modeling and preceptoring.

8.    Provides information to patient, families, nursing staff, health care professionals and community agencies/services regarding care requirements of children with renal disease.

9.    In consultation with other team members, participates in the development of education resources such as pamphlets and patient teaching videos by reviewing relevant literature/resources and providing written/verbal input to promote improvements to patient and family health education.

10.    Contributes information as a member of the health care team in patient care reviews and conferences.

11.    Provides input to the Patient Services Director, or delegate, regarding policies, procedures, and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions which address patient and family needs to promote effective use of resources.

12.    Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and staff by following established emergency procedures and safety practices and procedures.

13.    Promotes the implementation and evaluation of nursing research and quality improvement activities as directed by participating in the Pediatric PBCU working groups and nursing committees and by keeping current through attendance at educational in-services opportunities.

14.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• One year’s recent related experience such as ambulatory care or community health service experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Hemodialysis Certified
