Medical Director, Clinical Planning, BC Cancer Redevelopment

BC Cancer - Provincial (Flexible across BC Cancer Centres) 

Regular, Part-Time (0.40 FTE) (approximately 2 days per week) 

 

In accordance with the established vision and values of BC Cancer and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), the Medical Director, Clinical Planning, BC Cancer Redevelopment provides strategic medical leadership to support high quality, patient and family centred cancer care, while advancing major capital redevelopment priorities across the province.


Reporting jointly to the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operating Officer (or designate), the Medical Director works in dyad partnership with the Executive Director, Clinical Operations and Capital Development to lead clinical planning efforts for major redevelopment projects across BC Cancer, including sites in Kamloops, Surrey, Burnaby, and Nanaimo. 


This role provides provincial medical leadership to ensure redevelopment initiatives are clinically informed, operationally feasible, and aligned with BC Cancer’s strategic direction, care models, and provincial service delivery frameworks.


The position is a 0.4 FTE (approximately 2 days per week) and requires flexibility in work hours to meet the evolving needs of complex, multi site redevelopment initiatives.

What you’ll do


Key accountabilities

Strategic and operational leadership

  • Provide medical leadership representing the perspective of Medical Staff in major BC Cancer redevelopment projects.
  • Partner with executive and operational leaders to align redevelopment initiatives with BC Cancer’s strategic and operational priorities.
  • Engage with regional health authority partners to support planning and delivery of new cancer centres and expanded services.
  • Contribute to executive level planning, risk identification, and mitigation strategies for redevelopment initiatives.


Clinical planning and program design

  • Lead and support clinical planning processes for redevelopment projects across multiple sites.
  • Participate in the design and review of proposed services, ensuring alignment with BC Cancer care models, provincial standards, and projected service volumes.
  • Collaborate with clinical and operational teams, including physicians, senior leaders, and interdisciplinary staff, to identify program and service requirements, integrate clinical service delivery models, and establish clinical standards and operational guidelines.
  • Lead service redesign and best practice initiatives to improve integration, quality, and cost effectiveness while maintaining patient safety.
  • Oversee clinical program planning throughout project planning and construction phases.
  • Work with the BC Cancer Executive Team to ensure project plans are developed, implemented, and monitored, including reporting on risks and progress.


Human resource and physician workforce planning

  • Lead, in partnership with BC Cancer Executive, the development of physician human resource models to support redevelopment initiatives.
  • Ensure workforce planning supports sustainable, high quality care delivery across sites.
  • Promote cross site collaboration and integration of clinical resources across BC Cancer centres and provincial networks.
  • Work with existing medical leadership teams to design effective leadership structures for new and redeveloped sites.


Medical staff engagement and leadership

  • Engage physicians, academic leaders, and research partners in clinical planning and redevelopment processes.
    Facilitate meaningful opportunities for Medical Staff input into clinical service delivery planning, performance specifications, and procurement, design, and construction phases.
    Provide leadership through coaching, mentorship, and development of physician leaders.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, engagement, and shared accountability.

 

System integration and strategic alignment

  • Align clinical planning approaches with approved business plans and BC Cancer’s strategic priorities.
  • Ensure integration of clinical planning with equipment planning, Clinical and Systems Transformation (CST), and Information Management and Information Technology (IM/IT).
  • Partner with project and clinical leaders to support successful implementation of redevelopment initiatives.



Operational readiness

  • Collaborate with redevelopment teams, BC Cancer Executive, and site leadership to ensure new and redeveloped facilities are operationally ready.
    Support the development of plans to ensure safe, effective, and timely patient care delivery at go live.
  • Identify and address risks related to clinical operations, staffing, and service delivery readiness.

 

Partnerships and stakeholder engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with health authority partners, provincial stakeholders, and clinical and operational leaders across BC Cancer.
  • Represent BC Cancer in planning discussions related to redevelopment and system integration.



Communication and change leadership

  • Ensure effective engagement with clinical user groups and stakeholders to obtain input and consensus on planning decisions.
  • Lead and support the development of detailed operational and clinical service plans.
  • Communicate complex planning concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Support change management efforts associated with redevelopment and service transformation.


Medical staff governance

  • Support medical governance processes in alignment with PHSA and BC Cancer Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Policies.


Leadership on call

  • Participate in Medical Leadership On Call structures as required.



Other duties

  • Perform other related leadership responsibilities as assigned in support of BC Cancer’s redevelopment and strategic priorities.

 

What you bring



Qualifications

Education and credentials

  • Eligible for appointment to the Medical Staff of BC Cancer.
  • Current licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • A Master’s degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or related field is an asset.



Experience

  • Significant clinical practice experience as a physician.
  • Demonstrated senior medical leadership experience in complex healthcare environments.
  • Experience in clinical planning, capital projects, system redesign, and large scale transformation initiatives is strongly preferred.
