Job Summary

Salary Range: $76,111-$109,409/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.


Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Promotion Leader and as a member of the Prevention and Screening department, the Promotion Specialist provides expertise and guidance to internal stakeholders, and collaborates with department leadership to create and implement health promotion strategies and tactics for BC Cancer Prevention & Screening. The Promotion Specialist will use evidence-based information and approaches to promote awareness about cancer prevention and screening, and to increase participation in BC Cancer’s screening programs. The Promotion Specialist will develop high-level educational resources to support the understanding of screening guidelines and modifiable cancer risks, and to influence lifestyle choices of British Columbians to reduce their cancer risks.

Duties/Accountabilities:

  • Collaborates with department leadership to develop, implement, promote and evaluate cancer prevention and screening-focused promotion opportunities.
  • Builds strong relationships with internal and external partners, including Health Authority colleagues, stakeholders groups, community representatives and media to create grass roots promotion efforts and to leverage prevention and screening promotions activities.
  • Conducts ongoing environmental scans to stay current with best practices in health promotions and communication of cancer prevention and screening information.  Monitors other industries, Canadian and international, for innovative ideas to influence individuals’ decision-making about lifestyle choices.
  • Uses internal and externally sourced data including information obtained from community and stakeholder engagement, to identify barriers to prevention and screening practices, and to build audience profiles to support development of community-specific health promotion plans.
  • Makes evidence-informed recommendations to the Promotions Leader about promotion tactics and strategies.    
  • Develops and implements all promotion collateral for Prevention & Screening, including brochures, fact sheets, infographics, lay summaries and presentations to ensure overall quality, consistency and effectiveness of complex communication materials.
  • Conceptualizes and creates assets for promotional, advertising, educational and informational purposes by employing writing, graphic design, video production, photography and other creative methods.
  • Sets appropriate deadlines for completion of projects, updates project schedules to accommodate priorities and keeps Leader apprised of project status. Engages with vendors to ensure projects are on time and on budget.  
  • Tracks promotional activities and generates evaluation reports detailing effectiveness of each promotional campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as Public Health, Journalism, Public Relations or Communications and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a communications or marketing role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written) and demonstrated skill and proficiency using marketing and communication software, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with corporate branding standards, theory, and strategy.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive issues with skill, tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to use related equipment including project management, word processing and spreadsheet software at an advanced level.
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate activities and provide recommendations to leadership.
  • Excellent decision making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize workload including the flexibility to reprioritize quickly to meet changing priorities.
  • Ability to work under time pressure to meet deadlines and assist others to meet deadlines.
