Job Summary:
In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values, Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Under supervision of the Section Head, performs the routine technical work of the Cytogenetics Laboratory.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Sets up cultures of blood, marrow and amniotic fluid according to established procedures.
2. Harvests cultures, prepares and stains slides for microscopic analysis, including special stains and banding procedures.
3. Analyzes chromosomes under microscope and photographs representative metaphase figures.
4. Prepares karyotypes from photographs for examination by Cytogeneticist.
5. Makes routine entries in log books for accessioning and quality control according to written protocols.
6. Assists section Head in providing bench work instruction and orientation.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training & Experience •Successful completion of recognized competency assessment exam and registration in the fields of Cytogenetics & Molecular Diagnostics in accordance with the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) pathways, or current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science. Field of practice: Molecular Cytogenetics.
Skills & Abilities Demonstrated technical competence. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
