Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The General Duty Nurse, Anesthetic Care Unit provides and coordinates evidence-based, best practice nursing care services such as patient assessment, treatment, and re-assessment, patient and family teaching, and health promotion activities for pediatric patients and their families, using a trauma-informed, culturally safe, anti-racist, patient- and family centered approach, creating an inclusive space that is safe for all persons, consistent with established policies, standards and philosophy at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital and PHSA.


A first in Canada: minimum Nurse‑to‑Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are being introduced in B.C.! The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), alongside B.C.'s other regional health authorities, is implementing mNPRs as a transformative staffing initiative that aims to improve the working environment of nurses in order to provide better quality care to our patients.


Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Maintains patient records by collecting and documenting information including health care information regarding patients and their families, nursing observations, electronic communications, interventions, teaching, and care evaluations to ensure that patient records are current and complete.

2.    Plans and provides holistic, anti-racist direct care rooted in cultural humility for the infants, children, and youth by performing activities such as reviewing patient/ family history, developing a care plan specific for the patient and family, and meeting with other members of the health care team to discuss and review the care plan.  Collaborates with other members of the health care team to evaluate patient and family centered care in the practice setting.

3.    Provides education to patients and their support systems, in a manner acceptable to those individuals that facilitates the successful delivery of peri anesthesia patient care by providing, explaining, and demonstrating care procedures and practices.

4.    Identifies own learning needs, reviews these with the Program Manager or delegate, and engages in a variety of activities to meet these needs.

5.    Participates in the orientation and continuing education of all members of the care team by preceptoring and role-modelling.

6.    Acts as a clinical resource/support person to patients, nursing and health and care team professionals by explaining the theoretical rationale for nursing decisions.

7.    Provides input to the Program Manager, or delegate, regarding policies, procedures, and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions whenever improvement opportunities are noticed, which address patient and family needs and promote effective use of resources and advocates for patient care.

8.    Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and advocates for the patient and their support system in all aspects of the care interaction.

9.    Participates in research and Quality Improvement activities in collaboration with other members of the care team.

10.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
•    Minimum two years of nursing experience including a combination of one year in PACU, pediatric critical care or pediatric surgical experience in a tertiary level setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    CPR Training – Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) – Level 1.
•    Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.


Skills and Abilities

•    Demonstrated ability to communicate in a trauma-informed, culturally safe manner.
•    Demonstrated ability to connect with infants, children, youth and their support systems in a trauma-informed, culturally safe manner.
•    Ability to participate as a member of the interdisciplinary care team.
•    Ability to operate related equipment, including patient monitoring systems and electronic health records.
•    Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
