Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Global Health Research Nurse contributes to the success of the Centre for International Child Health (CICH) by assisting in the development and monitoring of this pilot program to support various global health research projects in order to enhance quality improvement, research, education, and partnership activities. The Global Health Research Nurse leads the development effectiveness of policies and procedures for nursing engagement in global health research, and engages with nurses and allied health professionals across BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital in global health through regular events, communications and interest groups. The Global Health Research Nurse is responsible for reviewing research protocol and study design with Study Investigator(s).  Completes case report forms, charts and other study documentation. Supports department/program personnel to ensure study requirements are met.

A first in Canada: minimum Nurse‑to‑Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are being introduced in B.C.! The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), alongside B.C.'s other regional health authorities, is implementing mNPRs as a transformative staffing initiative that aims to improve the working environment of nurses in order to provide better quality care to our patients.


Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Collaborates with the CICH and BC Children’s and Women’s leadership to develop, review and/or execute a project plan that builds a community of practice in global health for nurses and allied health at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital. Engages with health professionals across campus in global health through regular meetings, events, communications and interest groups.

2.    Leads the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures for nursing and allied health engagement in global health research. Ensures the development and updating of policies and procedures are aligned with institutional procedure and processes.

3.    Develops protocol applications and designs patient consent forms for REB (PHSA/UBC Clinical Research Ethics Board).

4.    Reviews research protocol and study design with the Study Investigator(s) and Study Coordinator(s).

5.    Prepares study documents including Research Ethics Board correspondence, and required regulatory documents as necessary.

6.    Reviews and explains the purpose and conduct of the study, explains consent forms to research assistants and healthcare workers from a global health context.  

7.    Supports research staff from a global health context regarding current trials and follows up to ensure compliance is maintained while participants are on trial protocols, and acts as a resource to research staff and colleagues when patients are enrolled in a study.

8.    Supports research staff from a global health context in maintaining required records and other related documentation including updating and completing case report forms. Ensures study documents and procedures are up to regulatory standards.

9.    Provides orientation regarding study and protocols to other staff as required.  Liaises with other members of the study team regarding clinical issues, records and data management, protocol changes, etc.

10.    Increases the capacity of healthcare workers in global health research and/or quality improvement activities by collegially sharing information and providing guidance around project specific activities or research methods as needed by the global health project.

11.    Communicates project updates to relevant local and international partners.  Presenting findings of research results and/or partnership building and educational activities at in-services, hospital lunch and learns and conferences. Prepares publications, abstracts and posters on research findings for academic publication and/or conferences.

12.    Identifies new potential research and educational partnerships and collaborations in nursing and allied professions with investigators, staff and students across C&W campus interested or engaged in global health.

13.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM)
• Minimum of three years recent related clinical pediatric or women’s health nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  

Skills and Abilities

• Comprehensive knowledge of international standards for nursing practice.
