The Provincial Early Hearing Screener Trainer provides orientation, training and educational services to Hearing Screening staff in all newborn hearing screening sites across the province. This role works in collaboration with other BC Early Hearing Program (BCEHP) staff and the Regional Coordinator(s) to perform learning needs analysis to meet the training needs and support ongoing skills development of Hearing Screening staff provincially. The Provincial Trainer supports in developing, implementing and evaluating provincial training and orientation programs, including new staff training on system functionality, workflows, practice, and equipment. The Provincial Trainer provides hands-on clinical mentorship of the BCEHP Hearing Screening Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process and reports on training and re-certification outcomes of CQI initiatives to BCEHP staff and the Regional Coordinators. Is an expert-level Hearing Screener, performing newborn hearing screening tests in compliance with the BCEHP Hearing Screening Protocol. This position involves travel and work throughout the province, as required.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Provides orientation and training activities for provincial newborn hearing screeners by methods such as utilizing training materials and resources, conducting formal presentations and demonstrations on hearing screening protocols, processes, and equipment. Ensures competency assessments are performed with Regional Coordinators or designated audiologists and documented after initial orientation as well as ongoing regular competency evaluations as required by the BCEHP.
2. Provides ongoing mentoring to newborn hearing screeners provincially and participates in organizational initiatives by providing information and input to Regional Coordinators and BCEHP staff to promote professionalism and best practice. Schedules screeners for ongoing training and evaluation sessions on a rotating basis and tracks learning goals related to the BCEHP Screening CQI program.
3. Participates in learning needs analysis and determining training and orientation requirements for staff, provides input and support in development and delivery of orientation and training programs, prepares educational materials, and provides ongoing skills development to staff. Provides feedback to Regional Coordinators and BCEHP supervisor to ensure learning objectives are met. Identifies and provides input to supervisor on opportunities for hearing screening quality improvement.
4. Participates in the revision, training and evaluation of the BCEHP newborn hearing screening protocols and participates in quality improvement and risk management activities as requested. Assists with the ongoing revision and development of BCEHP hearing screening resources. 5. Participates in the clinical evaluation of new potential screening equipment. Provides orientation of new hearing screening equipment once procured as required at BCEHP provincial hearing screening sites.
6. Plans and leads provincial BCEHP Screener workshops for hearing screening staff in collaboration with BCEHP staff and Regional Coordinators.
7. Identifies infants from the general newborn population who are eligible for hearing screening by following the BCEHP protocols and established criteria to determine when screening should be performed on infants and the appropriate method to be used and communicating determinations to the caregivers.
8. Conducts newborn hearing screening regularly and in exemplary compliance with the BCEHP Hearing Screening Protocol. Sets-up screening test conditions accurately, consistently obtains conclusive results and communicates results and follow-up recommendations effectively with the family and other care providers. Ensures that screening caseload is triaged, screened, and referred for follow-up in alignment with the BCEHP Hearing Screening Protocol.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Grade 12, five (5) years’ of recent related experience, including two (2) years’ experience in a training or mentorship role or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license.
