Job Summary:

In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values and Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager, Public Health, with matrix reporting to the designated Senior Practice Leader, the Nurse Educator works collaboratively within the program of education to undertake curriculum development and design and the delivery of educational programs specific to the prevention, control and treatment of Tuberculosis throughout the province of British Columbia.  The Nurse Educator works primarily within the scope of education that pertains to public health nursing practice but may also include other relevant public health care providers and clients.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Identifies, analyses, and uses relevant and valid information including research findings in the development of educational curriculum.

2. Consults and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders for the design and delivery of educational initiatives, educational programs, or other projects as appropriate.

3. Participates in a collaborative manner to assist in the design and delivery of educational initiatives of other educational programs within Clinical Prevention Services and across the agency.  

4. Leads and supports development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of nursing guidelines and Decision Support Tools in partnership and under guidance of the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).

5. Sets priorities when planning and providing educational programs to respond to Clinical Prevention Services and provincial public health educational needs.

6. Teaches using appropriate instructional methods and relevant theory in online, clinical, and workshop settings that may occur in collaboration with public health agencies throughout the province.

7. Applies learning and communication theory to create a professional learning environment for divisional staff and other learners in classroom, on-line, workshop, and clinical teaching and learning settings.

8. Participates in program evaluation and integrates relevant changes to enhance curriculum design and delivery.

9. Establishes and maintains appropriate education records.

10. Maintains competence in knowledge of relevant legislation and regulation that influence curriculum content including the Public Health Act and Health Professions Act within British Columbia.

11. Maintains and updates knowledge of education and practice by reviewing current literature and research, and identifying new theories/trends/programs to ensure clinical education programs, resources and activities are current, accurate and appropriate.

12. Participates in program planning and research within the service line of Clinical Prevention Services by participating in quality and safety initiatives, accreditation and other PHSA initiatives.  Providing input into research planning and implementing research activities and assisting in review of research results.

13. Collaborates in the drafting/development of provincial guidelines and best practice standards.  Provides consultation and support for Clinical Prevention Services, BC Centre for Disease Control, Health Authorities and community partners as appropriate for the implementation of policy and guidelines.

14. Participates in direct clinical services as required.

15. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Two (2) years’ experience in curriculum design and delivery, and clinical nursing practice education, plus one (1) year of experience in nursing practice specific to the prevention and treatment of TB. The Employer will equally consider an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated ability to teach, facilitate and lead in online, clinical, and workshop and other various settings.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and present educational programs and materials.
• Demonstrated computer skills including competence with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, and Internet Explorer, and to access computerized multi-media resources for education.
• Demonstrated ability to access appropriate literature databases and undertake literature searches.
• Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities, plan and organize work, and to work within time-sensitive projects.
• Demonstrated leadership in facilitating group work with multiple individuals and programs.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, deal effectively with conflict situations, and to problem solve.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
