Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) provides laboratory testing at 31 sites across the lower mainland and central coast of BC, including acute care hospital laboratories and specialty laboratories.
The Site Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day general supervision of the site and troubleshoots staffing and workflow issues. Participates in the planning and coordination of services; monitors the quality of technical work performed to ensure departmental standards are met and safety procedures are followed. Ensures that staff scheduling meets the operational requirements for the site, participates in recruitment and performance management, and trains and coaches team members. In collaboration with the Team Lead, and Operations Manager, facilitates workplace solutions and oversees the implementation of new or revised workflow processes in collaboration with discipline specific Technical Practice Lead and or Technical Coordinator.
What you’ll do
Oversee the supervision, support and coordination of the workflow and staffing activities for the area including reviewing workload assignments, adjusting schedules to utilize staff effectively within the allocated budget, establishing daily priorities, and assisting with troubleshooting work related issues in consultation with Medical Leads, Operations Manager and support team. Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Laboratory, by planning and implementing approved programs and systems in support of client needs. Assess and evaluate workflow and recommend and implement changes to meet the short- and long-term goals and the strategic direction of the department. Implement and communicate planned changes to staff and inform the Operations Manager and Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead of any feedback as required. Work with the Operations Manager and Team Lead to resolve problems and remove barriers.
Supervise designated staff to ensure appropriate service delivery and to provide general supervision for the site. Evaluate performance levels and participate in performance management of designated staff, provide input to updates for job descriptions, participate in interviews with the Operations Manager and make recommendations for hire as required. Schedule and ensure orientation plan are in place for new staff, and monitor and sign off on completion. Monitor and report on budget variances relating to issues such as overtime, sick time, and attendance management.
Monitor Quality Control and other quality indicators and make corrections as appropriate. Inform the Technical Practice Lead, Team Lead and Technical Coordinator of any technical quality issues and participate in the investigation of critical incidents as required. Ensure that the Operations Manager is kept informed of all quality and safety issues. Implement DAP standards and recommendations and ensure staff compliance. Ensure staff safety incidents and investigation reports are completed as per WorkSafeBC Regulation and PHSA Workplace Health standards. Review all incidents reports as per the Occurrence Management Process and investigate complaints from health care providers and patients. Ensure, monitor and audit site/area compliance to safety standards. Comply with safety responsibilities as outlined in the WorkSafeBC Regulation and Lower Mainland Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Safety Manual.
Ensure the Operations Manager, Technical Practice Lead, and Team Lead are informed of the equipment needs for the site/area and provide data such as test volumes and maintenance documents as required. Inform; Operations Manager, Technical Practice Lead, Team Lead and department staff of significant instrument failures as required.
Oversee the coordination of downtime procedures and ensure downtime protocol and process is available and familiar to all staff. Ensure that new staff has appropriate access to various computer systems and that education/training is provided.
Set measurable goals and objectives within the team environment through methods such as maintaining and updating own knowledge of clinical and professional development in collaboration with operations manager. Develop goal plans and review progress to ensure goals are achieved within established time frames.
Ensure laboratory representation and participation in program teams, and other internal/external committees such as LEAN projects, as required. Demonstrate expertise and provide leadership in area through methods such as reviewing and evaluating literature/materials and attending workshops and conferences.

Qualifications
Successful completion of recognized competency assessment exam and registration in the relevant field(s) of practice in accordance with the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) pathways, or certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). Bachelor of Science degree or an Advanced Registered certificate or completion of a supervisory/management program plus a minimum of five (5) years’ recent, related experience including three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. A valid BC driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for business related purposes.
Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.

Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
Skills & Knowledge
Comprehensive knowledge and recent related experience in laboratory discipline
Comprehensive knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technologists established by the CAMLPR or CSMLS and/or other relevant national professional associations
