Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Perinatal Nurse (RN) provides direct care to select patients and their families.  Provides education and support to families.  Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of clinic services.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team (physician, clinicians, social worker, nutritionist, residents, etc.) in providing nursing care for clinic patients.  This includes assessment planning, implementing and evaluation of care plans.

2.    Coordinates referral and care of complex patients.

3.    Coordinates in hospital or community referrals for specific patients.  Maintains liaison with other hospital programs and community resources.

4.    Provides orientation to MSI, residents, fellows and nurses for specific clinic services.

5.    Participates in Quality assurance activities for the program, i.e. chart audits and compiling statistics.

6.    Provides education materials and phone consultation to other care providers in the Province of BC as requested (outreach).

7.    Educates patients on aspects of pregnancy, labour, delivery and postpartum care by providing appropriate reading material, resources and explanations of care management.

8.    Assists the Clinical Resource Nurse in developing and implementing patient education and in identifying in-service education needs for staff.

9.    Assesses patients and provides emotional support to pregnant women and their families undergoing prenatal procedures.

10.    Assists the physician performing prenatal procedures by providing support to patients, ensuring availability of equipment and supplies and identifying and labelling specimens.

11.    Follows up on patient care issues by ensuring appropriate documentation and communication to the physician.

12.    Maintains current knowledge in prenatal procedures through new literature review and evaluation of updated diagnostic procedures and techniques.

13.    Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Two (2) years recent related experience in caring for of obstetrically complex women including experience in fetal monitoring and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certification in Cardiotocography required.
• Current CPR
