Reporting to the Clinical Operations Managers for Irregularly Scheduled Employees (ISE) within Vancouver Post, the Practice Educator works in a team-based environment and is responsible for ensuring the effective integration and development of new employees, from initial orientation through their transition into regular duties. This role provides frontline support to paramedics, ensuring they are prepared, confident, and aligned with BCEHS expectations and operational standards. Additionally, the role supports behavioral development, professional integration, and workplace adaptation while fostering a culture of continuous clinical learning and professional growth.

 

Paramedic Practice Educators are expected to act in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures, clinical practice guidelines, organizational and EMALB scope of practice, and appropriate legislation. Paramedic Practice Educators act as ambassadors for practice development including trialing, evaluating and championing new initiatives and employee onboarding and development relevant to the delivery of patient care in BCEHS services This role will play an integral part in education, in particular for new FT employees to the Vancouver Post.

 

Duties

  • Perform all key accountabilities of the Paramedic role.
  • Support new employees in their professional integration, ensuring a seamless transition into BCEHS operational roles.
  • Provide frontline coaching and mentorship, ensuring employees develop competence, confidence, and professional behaviors aligned with BCEHS standards.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical operations to align onboarding strategies with organizational goals.
  • Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and practice reference documents for team members. Using established educational standards, the Practice Educator determines match between content and delivery method and provides feedback to all stakeholders to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.
  • Facilitates learning in the field and classroom by coaching and acting as a clinical resource and demonstrates expertise and leadership in paramedic practice through methods such as reviewing literature and developments in technology and equipment, consulting with community experts, evaluating clinical practice systems/standards, identifying new theories/trends/education programs, developing new/revised standards and presenting educational sessions based upon specialized body of knowledge to enhance quality patient care.
  • Identifies, develops and implements customized learning plans, in collaboration with the responsible supervisor or delegate to meet individual learning needs of staff allowing a paramedic to achieve the desired level of competency related to knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical judgments. Provides direct clinical instruction to new and existing staff as required and facilitates learning by role modeling direct patient care skills and practices to staff in a classroom or in the field, promoting skill development, observing staff while performing patient care, including documentation practices, and providing feedback to ensure care is provided according to practice standards and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning and patient outcomes using program/resource evaluation, utilization statistics, and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.
  • Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities through methods such as evaluating effect of changes in patient care practice, generating recommendations for alternative approaches, provides education to staff as a result of Patient Safety & Learning System reports, and recommending changes to selected policies, procedures or protocols; drafts new and/or revised procedures, standards and criteria for the program in conjunction with the inter- professional team. Initiates strategies to improve patient care using principles of continuous quality improvement to promote delivery of high-quality educational services.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and makes recommendations regarding the purchase of equipment as required.
  • Participates in provincial and regional groups as a clinical education resource, providing input and suggestions related to education implications and group processes of new initiatives to ensure that clinical educational needs are addressed.
  • Documents educational process and utilization statistics by maintaining database and records, and by providing written and verbal reports to demonstrate accountability and to continuously improve the quality of clinical education services.
  • Provides consultation to staff regarding professional development, practice education and/or career planning by maintaining interpersonal contact and observation, providing verbal and written feedback for the individual to continue competency development, meeting with team members on a one-to-one basis and recommending educational programs/resources and facilitating development of learning and/or professional growth plans with new staff.
  • Contributes to on-going staff performance by auditing and assessing performance during orientation, probation, skills review and education and training sessions and provides feedback to the learner to assist in development of a personal learning plan.
  • Participates in paramedic students' clinical experience by, coordinating student placements and preceptor assignments in collaboration with the Senior Leader, and Transition to Practice & Practice Education and other team members.
  • Participates in approved paramedicine and inter-professional research and special projects through methods such as identifying research topics/issues, promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, supporting evidence- based pre-hospital care practice and gathering and summarizing data to improve education and clinical effectiveness.
  • Ensures BCEHS educational programs are in compliance with Work Safe BC (WSBC), PHSA and BCEHS Health & Safety standards, organizational goals, values and policies. Engages and collaborates with Patient Care Delivery, Safety Advisors and Workplace Health to ensure compliance with regulations and policy, timely investigation of issues/incidents, and proactively report and resolve safety or labor related concerns.
  • Contributes to, promotes and leads, an organizational culture that is patient focused, supportive and respectful of all employees embracing BCEHS guiding principles and values ensuring that all interactions are performed with professionalism, courtesy, dignity and respect.
  • Fosters a positive work environment that empowers and encourages employees to realize their maximum potential, creates commitment, ownership and personal growth. Develops a ‘just culture’ and a culture of continuous learning by building healthy relationships and mentoring others. Supports and actively participates in employee recognition processes.
  • Promotes excellence, innovation, quality, and safety by identifying risks, system’s issues, and opportunities for improvement of quality or processes working closely with team members throughout the organization to ensure problem resolution and customer satisfaction
  • Support and assist frontline employees in accessing support services and assist in facilitating access to Critical Incident Stress Management and debriefing support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of BCEHS Clinical Practice Guidelines, BCEHS Scope of Operational Clinical Practice, BCEHS Standards of Competency and Professional Practice, policies and procedures, organizational standards and province-wide geography
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • The ability to adapt education approach to reflect requirements, local needs, and national trends.
  • Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the province of British Columbia
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
  • Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback.
  • Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants and field staff.
  • Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality. Knowledge of quality
  • improvement methodology and its application.
  • A good understanding and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting needs assessments and in curriculum development.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities specifically around paramedic practices and   procedures. Demonstrate the use of critical thinking and sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Recent experience in a supervisory role.
  • Good understanding of supervisory principles.
  • Physical ability and mental resilience to carry out the duties of the position.

 

Selection Criteria

 

Selection will be in accordance with Article 13.03 of the Collective Agreement.

 

Essential Requirements:

  1. CUPE member
  2. Must have three (3) years plus a day of experience within BCEHS at the relevant Paramedic Level (PCP)
  3. Satisfactory work record; must be maintained for the duration of this qualification

The above noted qualifiers must be achieved by the closing of the posting per standard selection processes for CUPE 873 employees.

 

Selection Process:

 

1. Knowledge/Skills Assessment (45% of total score)

 

Applicants will be required to successfully complete a knowledge/skills assessment. This assessment is online through the Learning Hub and must be completed from a location with reliable internet access. Eligible applicants will be notified of the interview date(s) at least 7 days in advance

2. Interview (45% of total score)

 

Applicants who successfully achieve a score of 65% or higher on the Knowledge/Skills Assessment will be scheduled to interview. Eligible applicants will be notified of the interview date(s) at least 7 days in advance. Please check your BCEHS email for interview invites if you are successful on the exam.

 

Should you be unsuccessful on the written exam or pass the exam but not participate in the interview process, you will be counted as "unsuccessful" and will not be eligible to compete on roles in the same classification for a period of 6 months.

 

3. Full-Time Seniority (Up to 10% of total score)

 

Up to 10% will be applied to eligible candidates who complete the interview to determine their final score.

 

The successful candidate(s) shall be the employee(s) with the highest total score and a satisfactory disciplinary record.

 

Training

Successful candidates will be required to attend and successfully complete a variety of training, including but not limited to courses, orientation, and field training. Successful applicants are required to attend training.
