*Successful applicants who pass the fitness assesment will take part in one three-day BCEHS Bike Squad course and Planned Events Orientation as noted above.

 

The Paramedic Bike Squad (PBS) has been an operational component of BCEHS since 1992, primarily for response at mass gatherings, contracted special events, Vancouver International Airport, and the DTES of Vancouver. Bike Squad members are one of the most visible representatives of BCEHS and are expected to represent the organization in only the most positive and professional manner. 

 

Employees will be selected from within the Vancouver Post including Stations 280, 283, 287, & 288 based in Vancouver Post, to augment current bike squad members on an ad-hoc basis. Employees must understand and accept that this is a very physical role requiring work outside in various weather conditions throughout the year.

 

BCEHS is seeking employees who meet the following requirements:

 

Qualifications

  • Maintain a PCP-IV license minimum
  • Be attached to the Post selected for training
  • Have no medical or operational restrictions that prevent them from working on a bicycle.
  • Are able and willing to be an ambassador that embodies all BCEHS values, creating an atmosphere that is always positive, respectful, and professional
  • Understand and demonstrate the ability to be self-directed
  • Are willing and capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions and under demanding situations
  • Agree to, and abide by, the BCEHS Code of Ethics
  • Will attend an in-person Paramedic Bike Squad training on one of the three training sessions:  April 8,9,10 / April 21,22,23 / April 28,29,30

 

Selection Process - candidates will be notified via their BCEHS email address. 

 

To ensure success in this role, applicants must complete and pass a prequalifying fitness assessment, encompassing a series of strength tests, a cardiovascular assessment, and slow speed maneuvering skills on a bicycle. Assessments will occur at a third-party fitness vendor in Burnaby. Selected candidates must self-schedule their fitness assessment with the third-party vendor within the outlined testing window sent via email. Primary testing dates (i.e., where more testing slots will occur) are within four weeks of the posting closing/fitness assessment timeline email being sent. Applicants will only be given one opportunity to be successful for pre-qualifications.

  • A cardiovascular assessment,
  • A strength assessment, and
  • A slow speed maneuverings assessment on a BCEHS supplied bicycle.
  • Helmets are mandatory.

Upon successful completion of the fitness assessment, a minimum of 8 employees will be offered a seat in a 3-day paramedic bike squad training course per the above-listed dates. Selection will be in accordance with Article 13.01 of the collective agreement.

 

Additional Information

 

Paramedics who complete the training will be compensated in accordance with article 23.03 (d) as required in-service training to be attended on days off. Successful completion of the training is required before employees may be scheduled for bike squad shifts.

 

All PBS members will be required to pass a fitness assessment every two years from the date of training completion to maintain their qualification.

 

Paramedics who are bike squad qualified will have the ability to work in any location where a bike squad is in operation while their qualification is valid. Paramedics wishing to work at YVR Station 270 must also pass the enhanced security clearance requirement

 

Other details are as follows:

  • The applicant must be able to safely demonstrate basic bicycle operation and maintenance.
  • Applicants will supply their own bicycle for the pre-qualification test.
  • Each bicycle must meet pre-testing safety checks.
  • Applicants will ensure that their bicycle has tires equal to or wider than 1.9 inches.
  • Helmets are mandatory.
  • Applicants will only be given one opportunity to be successful for the pre-qualifications.
