BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province's most acutely ill and injured children and young people and provides developmental and rehabilitation services throughout BC. BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a mixed surgical/medical unit that includes an active cardiac program, including ECMO and neurosurgical intensive care. There are over 1200 admissions annually. The PICU is a state-of-the-art 28-bed unit located within the Teck Acute Care Centre. As a leader in the field and a member of the dedicated team of critical care specialists, your prime responsibility will be direct clinical patient care of critically ill children in the PICU, as well as support of their families. Reporting to the Medical Director and Division Head of the Pediatric Critical Care Unit, this position will enable you to use your relevant clinical experience in providing exemplary medical care to children in PICU. You will be a key member of our multidisciplinary team, providing advanced support (including Extra-Corporeal Life Support) to critically ill children with diverse medical and surgical conditions including congenital heart disease and organ transplant.

 

 

You will also be responsible for providing outreach critical care advice and support within the Emergency Department, inpatient wards, and beyond. You will also assist in the inter-hospital transfer of patients in collaboration with our provincial transport system. As logistical and clinical coordination of transport of critically ill children are essential components of the position, experience in transport medicine is essential.

 

 

The successful candidate will work actively to encourage a culture of teamwork and collaboration within the critical care team. A respectful workplace policy is in effect across the agency. In addition, you may be required to mentor and teach students, resident staff and other health care professionals in the Intensive Care Unit.

 

 

The ideal candidate for this position will hold a medical degree from an approved LCME school, along with current licensure to practice in British Columbia with at least six months of Pediatric ICU experience and experience in transport medicine. Further subspecialty training or certification in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Anesthesia or Pediatric Emergency Medicine are considered assets.
