The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Mother Baby Care (MBC). The Neonatal Program of BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre offers a strong academic environment with a philosophy of evidence-based practice, support for patient-centred research and quality improvement and opportunities for innovation and excellence in clinical care.


What you’ll do

  • Assess the nutritional needs of selected patients by evaluating biochemical, anthropometric, dietary parameters and/or subjective global assessment. Develop and implement comprehensive nutrition care plans; make recommendations regarding nutrient requirements, feeding choices and methods of delivery including the use of total parenteral nutrition, initiation and management of early trophic feeding and advancement of enteral feeds.
  • In response to biochemical laboratory data, and in consultation with the treatment team, monitor and adjust nutrition care plans. Consult with physicians and other health care professionals regarding patient response to nutrition care plans. Communicate plan to other health care providers, family and/or caregivers in hospital or community.
  • Participate in patient care rounds and clinics by evaluating and reporting on aspects of the nutritional care plan. According to established guidelines, maintain and update patient files and make notes regarding recommendations or adjustments.
  • Develop and provide individual and group teaching sessions for staff and caregivers regarding comprehensive nutrition and support for this population.
  • Complete and maintain appropriate, related records for activities performed including for example, documentation of the nutritional care plan on patients charts, workload statistics, formula requisitions, menus and manual and electronic patient care databases.
  • Develop written educational materials and related resources for other health care professionals including, dietitians, physicians, nurses, social workers and students.
  • Utilize and promote evidence-based care and integrates research findings into current practice. Participate in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of clinical research proposals, projects and surveys regarding the management of low birth weight infants and related therapies, including data collection and analysis. Disseminate research and clinical findings through publications and presentations.
  • Assist the Program Manager and Medical Director in evaluating the program operation and establishing goals and objectives from a clinical nutrition perspective by helping to review caseload, treatment trends and statistics. Work collaboratively and use outcome based indicators where possible to evaluate, review and update nutrition protocols, guidelines and standards of care to ensure that the therapeutic, patient and family needs are met.
  • As part of a multidisciplinary team, participate in community outreach activities, which may include attending clinics and making presentations at conferences, seminars or workshops. Provide consultation to the regional, community and paediatric centres and other organizations.
  • Participate in hospital, department and university programs related to teaching. Provide suggestions for dietetic intern experiences and provides students with the opportunity to observe and take an active role in the education and treatment of premature or low birth weight infants and neonates.

 

What you bring

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor degree in a nutrition related discipline plus completion of an accredited Dietitians of Canada Dietetic Internship or equivalent.
  • Full registration as a Dietitian with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.
  • Three years recent related clinical and research experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within CW contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system.

  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

  • Comprehensive knowledge of biochemistry and human metabolism and advanced training in Nutrition Support, such as Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian ( CNSD).

  • Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.
  • Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes.
