Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Technical Leader and working under the general clinical direction of the Professional Practice Leader, performs medical laboratory technologist additional procedures such as specific bone marrow, flow cytometry, and special coagulation procedures, the majority of the time.  Performs general medical laboratory technologist duties as required.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Receives, processes, and stores laboratory specimens for analysis, according to established procedures.

2. Performs analytical procedures, including bone marrow procedures, flow cytometry, and special coagulation, following established protocols.  Evaluates and verifies results according to established procedures, and files results in a timely manner to meet turnaround time requirements. Recognizes abnormal results, and follows up effectively according to established procedures.

3. Performs all related functions required for the production of final reports such as preparing, testing, assessing and recording quality control results prior to release of clinical results, troubleshooting specimen adequacy, and preparing dilutions, according to established procedures.

4. Enters and retrieves data using the Laboratory Information System, including patient demographics and test results, and answers inquiries about test results from hospital staff and physicians. Records workload statistics as required.

5. Collects blood and other patient specimens for analysis, according to established procedures.

6. Demonstrates laboratory procedures and routines to new staff, residents, students and fellows, and answers questions about technical processes in the work area.

7. Performs routine equipment maintenance according to established procedures. Performs basic equipment troubleshooting and notifies supervisor as required.

8. Maintains a safe work environment by keeping the work area clean, safe, and organized, and by following the policies and procedures contained in the Laboratory Safety Manual and other safety references.

9. Provides input in the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures by making recommendations for changes to the Supervisor.

10. Participates as an active member of the laboratory team by engaging in activities such as interacting with other staff members, attending staff meetings, identifying concerns about work/workplace issues, generating solutions to identified problems and participating in the development and achievement of departmental goals.

11. Keeps abreast of technological developments in the field and maintains knowledge by reading related literature and attending approved lectures, courses and workshops.

12. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
Graduation from a recognized school of Medical Technology, plus one year’s recent related experience in special hematology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Successful completion of recognized competency assessment exam and registration in the relevant field(s) of practice in accordance with the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) pathways, or certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). Field of Practice: Hematology.
