Job Summary

Please note: The role involves overseeing quality control, implementing new methods and equipment, writing and reviewing SOPs, managing staff competencies, and responsibility for laboratory equipment.


Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Performs General Duty Technical work which includes hematology, chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, accessioning and microbiology. Assists the Laboratory Site Supervisor with staff scheduling, inservicing, work direction, preventative maintenance and the quality control program.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Collects and/or receives laboratory specimens and performs clinical tests ordered or prepares specimen for referral following standardized laboratory techniques as outlined in the appropriate manuals. Performs phlebotomies including both venipuncture and micro sampling on adults and children.
2. In the absence of the Site Supervisor, provides work direction to other staff and deals with scheduling issues as necessary.
3. Assists to the Site Supervisor in development of the staffing schedule to meet the department staffing needs in accordance with established guidelines and contracts.
4. Performs a variety of bench techniques:  quality control, specimen analysis and interpretation of test results with respect to accuracy, acceptability and limits.
5. Participates in quality control/assurance activities with appropriate departmental education, such as monitoring quality control results and assists with the development of quality control ranges for new tests or controls.
6. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to established procedures and schedules.
7. Assumes troubleshooting duties commensurate with education and experience obtained within the department and from other resources when possible, such as replacement of expensive parts and resolves problems beyond the scope of the Technologist I.
8. Reviews site specific procedure manuals and recommends changes.  Assists the Site Supervisor in inservicing the staff as to changes.
9. Assists with the implementation of new methods and equipment as directed by Site Supervisor.
10. Participates in decision-making processes in the laboratory, such as staff meetings and problem-solving discussions.
11. Attends, participates and evaluates continuing and inservice education programs, such as teleconferences, lectures from regional laboratory consultants, in-house programs.
12. Completes time book according to hospital procedure and union contract provisions.
13. Completes workload measurement sheets.
14. Works independently, organizing the work to meet established deadlines.
15. Orders and maintains laboratory supplies at an appropriate level.
16. Cleans and maintains work area in a safe and organized fashion. Adheres to policies and procedures outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
17. Performs clerical duties related to processing and completing patient reports.
18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience
Registered General Technologist.  Currently registered with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSLMS). Minimum of five years’ recent experience in a general duty laboratory or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Interest in continuing self-education and development essential. Field of Practice: Core Laboratory.
