Job Summary

Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.      Performs Duties related to the ordering, maintenance, cleaning and assembling of Respiratory Therapy equipment plus quality assurance activities.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.Disassembles, scrubs and sorts respiratory equipment for decontamination by Sterile Processing Department (SPD).

2.Cleans ventilator and other respiratory related equipment. Disassembles components such as ventilator exhalation blocks for cleaning, maintenance and reassembling; tests reassembled equipment for proper functioning.

3.Reassembles oscillator circuit following SPD process and ensures proper function of circuit through calibration process.

4.Liaises with SPD staff to ensure proper cleaning and assembling procedures are adhered to by informing them of procedures for new equipment and providing feedback on SPD techniques according to product instruction and Infection Control Policy.

5.Delivers respiratory equipment such as oxygen, air tanks and specialized medical gases to the Infection Control Department and Transport Room; transports respiratory equipment to BC Women’s, Clinics and Shaughnessy according to safety standards.

6.Maintains and stocks uniform room and ensures adequate supplies are maintained.

7.Responsible for ventilator patient circuit changes in the Special Care Nursery and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, in conjunction with the Respiratory Therapist or Registered Nurse; documents changes on Respiratory Therapy flow-sheets.

8.Maintains filing system for all supply/purchasing transactions and Respiratory Therapy Equipment catalogues. Orders items through Logistics and Direct Purchases as needed.

9.Orientates Third Year University of the Cariboo College Respiratory Therapy Students, new staff members and SPD staff members with respect to equipment costs and/or purchasing procedures.

10.Checks and stocks Module ABC and clinic Emergency boxes with supplies such as manual resuscitation and oxygen delivery supplies. Performs and documents Quality Assurance by checking expiration dates on supplies such as drug kits, checking battery power on respiratory equipment and recording information in a log. Changes expired equipment and drug kits.

11.Performs inventory control of respiratory equipment in all patient care areas by counting supplies in storage areas and replenishing.

12.Keeps records of which Respiratory Therapists have submitted workload statistics and follows up to ensure that staff comply with requirement to submit stats as per MIS guidelines.

13.Maintains total ventilator statistics from Intensive Care areas by collecting patient ventilator counts and recording data in statistics binder.

14.Maintains and updates equipment policy manual in coordination with Education Coordinator, Equipment Therapist and supervisors. Also compiles and creates new policies for new incoming equipment according to guidelines set by vendors.

15.Sets up and maintains equipment for emergency disaster plan use by ensuring products are not expired and in proper working condition.

16.Develops new ventilator circuitry configurations by determining whether components can be recycled for re-use.

17.Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•Grade 12 plus one year recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
