About the Opportunity:
We are looking for a Senior Writer who is creative, nimble and passionate about communicating to audiences in inspiring ways and is energized by the opportunity to execute strategies that elevate stakeholder awareness and support of the BC Cancer Foundation’s activities.
The Senior Writer, Development will report to the Head Writer, Development.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Plays a key role in determining the strategic direction of impact report content and making recommendations on how to convey concepts to highly specialized donor audiences.
- Creates highly customized materials for individual Major Gift (MG) donors with a strategic focus.
- Elevates BCCF’s written communications by employing impactful key messages combined with compelling visual elements and layout to have the maximum impact for various audiences of highly sophisticated MG donors.
- Analyzes and identifies where gaps may exist that would increase impact and recommends solutions for them.
- Collaborates with/supports fundraisers across the province to achieve their stewardship-related strategic goals through customized written materials.
- Applies expert communication skills to translate complex scientific concepts from BC Cancer experts to BC Cancer Foundation staff and various donor audiences.
- As a voice of authority on BC Cancer projects, seeks out opportunities and platforms to share information from these projects in real time with BCCF staff.
- Provides guidance and context to fundraisers and other colleagues within the organization, in understanding key concepts from BC Cancer projects.
- Provides information to internal stakeholders about BC Cancer initiatives, gathers information from BC Cancer scientists, clarifies key points and creates tools to manage the flow of information to Foundation staff.
- Ensures BC Cancer updates are translated into lay language and leveraged to their fullest potential
- Has full autonomy over impact report and endowment report writing.
- Manages and executes all tasks independently to meet expected deadlines and identifies and implements creative solutions when barriers arise.
- Creates new tools and streamlines processes as needed to aid in project management and completion of time-sensitive tasks.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, creative writing or a related field.
- 3-5 years professional writing/editing experience.

- Superior writing and editing skills are essential.
- Experience writing in a variety of styles, across a range of formats, adapted to various audiences.
- Ability to translate and explain complex scientific concepts for a lay audience.
- Ability to lay out copy, text boxes, infographics and images in Microsoft Word templates.
- A keen editing eye for copy, ability to reduce word count as needed to achieve a succinct and compelling final product.
Salary Range: $65,000 to $87,500
