Job Summary:

The Electrophysiology Technologist assists staff in all aspects of electrophysiological care in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures. Organizes, directs and monitors the activities within the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab and manages patients who have or will need electrophysiological care. Provides support and education for patients and family members and functions as a resource person for other caregivers. Works in collaboration with the healthcare team. Integrates research into practice. Creates, utilizes and/or disseminates new knowledge. Performs pacemaker and cardiology technology duties as required.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Sets up equipment, conducts electrophysiology studies, operates the recording system and energy generator during the radiofrequency catheter ablation procedures, collects and analyzes data, and prepares technical reports within the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab, and other acute clinical care  environments such as the Emergency Room, Operating Room, and inpatient units. Checks integrity of catheters and prepares them for sterilization.

2. Oversees and coordinates daily caseload of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab. Coordinates electrophysiological patients by performing such duties as scheduling patient visits.

3. Consults with Administrative Manager and/or Director of the Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology Lab in establishing a database and index of all electrophysiological patients and procedures, monitoring advisories. Maintains database and generates statistics and workload reports.

4. Consults with Administrative Manager and/or Director of the Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology Lab in developing and maintaining policies and procedures and quality control standards for all technical aspects of electrophysiological care, including ensuring the availability and maintenance of equipment in the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab and taking appropriate steps when there are issues.

5. Provides leadership by functioning as a resource for the other Cardiology Technologists and physicians when dealing with equipment or patient related matters and by maintaining current knowledge and familiarity with technological advancements in the field of cardiac pacing and electrophysiology. Responds to queries from internal and/or external sources regarding electrophysiological care and their manifestations in the patients.

6. Maintains equipment for the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab and checks equipment for optimal functioning.

7. In conjunction with the Administrative Manager, monitors expenditures and makes recommendations regarding the budget for the assigned area. Evaluates and selects equipment and supplies for the assigned area and participates in preparation of capital equipment requests and plans ahead for future equipment needs.

8. Maintains inventory levels by ordering supplies through Logistics; signs for receipt of supplies and equipment.

9. Identifies research opportunities. Participates in, develops, and/or promotes research. Utilizes and promotes evidence-based care. Disseminates research and clinical findings through publications, presentations, seminars, etc.

10. Works under direction of Cardiologist for pacemaker clinic sessions by setting up the equipment, preparing the patients by applying pacemaker leads, performing ECGs and recording threshold tests; compiling information for reports. Explains procedures to prepare patients for pacemaker interrogation and related tests and answers related questions as required.  Informs cardiologist of any abnormalities.

11. Performs Cardiology Technologist duties including explaining and performing ECGs on patients; performing holter hook-up, monitoring, scanning and analysis for 24 / 48 hours recordings; scanning and analyzing ECG, stress, and/or holter reports; informing cardiologist of any abnormalities; and  providing information on tests and procedures to physicians as required.

12. Explains and performs cardiopulmonary exercise tests and/or treadmill stress tests by attaching electrodes to the patient and recording studies.  Operates equipment, analyzes data and records relevant information for interpretation by the cardiologist.

13. Instructs patients and parents in the use of cardiac screeners and records trans-telephonic transmissions. Informs cardiologist of any abnormalities.

14. Maintains active charts; retrieves, sorts and files old charts in storage.

15. Participates in continuing education activities.

16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from a recognized program in Cardiology Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, or related
field.
• One (1) year recent related experience in the cardiac, cardio-respiratory health or acute care environment
such as Cardiology Technologist, Cardiovascular Technologist or an equivalent combination of education
training and experience.
• Successful completion of an advanced certificate in Electrophysiology Technology.
• Current qualifications in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

Skills and Abilities

• Comprehensive knowledge of heart rhythm device programming in the designated clinical setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge of specialty area and current knowledge of the most recent advances in
electrophysiology diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including ablation, non-fluoroscopic mapping,
and drug provocation testing in the designated clinical setting.
• Knowledge and technical competence to perform pacemaker threshold testing, sensing, and
troubleshooting; with an ability to respond to alerts and operate related equipment.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
• Ability to deal with others effectively and function as an active member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to work in acute clinical care environments such as Emergency Room, Operating Room, and
Intensive Care Unit.
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with all levels of staff and patients.

• Basic proficiency with computers and windows-based software packages such as word processing,
