Job Summary:

Provides and coordinates nursing practice activities such as patient assessment, patient and family teaching, and health promotion activities in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1.Initiates and coordinates assessment and post assessment referrals, responds to patient, family, and health care member’s enquiries, and liaises with other support diagnostic/health services in coordinating patient referrals.
2.Collaborates with nursing staff, medical staff, health care disciplines, and community agencies/services to plan patient care in the Cardiology Clinic and community setting.
3.Consults with nursing staff, nursing instructors, and students to plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for Cardiac Surgery / Cardiology patients and families.
4.Promotes and implements clinical teaching for patients / families undergoing cardiac surgery.
5.Participates in the orientation and continuing education of nursing staff, and students by role modelling and preceptoring.
6.Consults with educational resources such as in-house/external agencies, in developing and implementing continuing education and professional nursing practice development for BCCH nursing staff.
7.Acts as a clinical nursing resource person for patients, families, nursing staff, health care professionals, and community agencies/services.
8.In consultation with other members of the Cardiac Sciences team, plans and develops educational resources such as pamphlets, pamphlets, patient teaching videos, for patient and family health education.
9.Participates as a member of the Cardiac Sciences health care team in facilitating patient care reviews and conferences.
10.Provides input to the Patient Services Director, or delegate, regarding policies, procedures, and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions which address patient and family needs and promote effective use of resources.
11.Consults with the multidisciplinary team in identifying and implementing appropriate resolutions to ethical issues / concerns relating to patients and families.
12.Promotes the implementation and evaluation of nursing research and quality improvement activities as directed by participating in committee work and by keeping current through attendance at education and inservice opportunities.
13.Performs other professionally related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Three years recent related pediatric cardiac clinical nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Ambulatory care experience or community health service experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to relate effectively to children and their families.
• Ability to make decisions in an independent manner in a clinical setting.
• Ability to function as an active member of a multidisciplinary team, and function as a nursing resource.
• Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate educational sessions based on the principles of adult education.
• Ability to operate related equipment (e.g. personal computer).
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
