Expression of Interest: Critical Incident Stress Program Peer Volunteers

The Critical Incident Stress Management Program is a trusted, confidential BCEHS initiative rooted in the PHSA Coast Salish Teaching Eyhh Slaxin, embracing the principle of 'Good medicine.' Our program is designed to mitigate the potentially adverse psychological and emotional impacts caused by incidental or cumulative critical incidents. We offer timely, evidenced based interventions and coping strategies through peer support, clinical referrals, defusing, and debriefing. A major component of the Critical Incident Stress Management program is the Peer Volunteer team. The CISM Peer Team recognizes and relies on a rich diversity of skills, knowledge, and experience, and values a safe inclusive and welcoming environment.

As we grow our team, we encourage applications from all backgrounds and abilities, including 2SLGBTQIA+ (2-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Plus) and IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, Persons of Colour) communities.

Optional: Please feel free to self-identify or provide any details you wish to share in your application.

Members from all departments and regions of the province are needed.

Peers must have good listening and empathy skills and use healthy self-care strategies. Respondents must be willing to respond in person and/or by telephone to colleagues when activated by the CIS Coordinator. Volunteers are expected to provide a minimum of 40 hours of service per year (which equates to an average of 1 peer call per week).

Previous training in critical incident stress management is not necessary. The latest training in the International Critical Incident Stress Management skills will be provided. Successful completion of the training and signing a “performance and confidentiality agreement” will be a condition of final selection. Participants will be expected to participate in bi-annual activities to maintain competence and adhere to program policies.

Application Process – 2 Steps:

  • Applicants must apply to the online job posting through the Applicant Tracking System (this posting) by November 23, 2025

  1. A one-page letter that includes:
    • Your reasons for volunteering with the CISM program,
    • An answer to the following question: “This role requires being available on short notice at times. How do you see yourself managing this responsibility alongside your other commitments?”
    • Your current license level,

    • Your work location
  2. Two written recommendations from colleagues, commenting on your listening ability and ability to provide confidential interpersonal support. Contact information must be included.
